Hi guys I have a set of PPI 52.1 (5 1/4") component speakers in my doors, and PPI 69.1 (6 x 9) speakers in the rear. I have the chance to get a set of Type S (alpine) 6.5 " components for my doors. would it be good to replace them with the Type -s ? or are the PPI's better? I haven't had a chance to install the Alpine's yet so I don't know how good they even sound.

Also, what should I be setting my low pass and high pass filters to? for the front and rear. this is something I have never messed with, only left it at the default settings.

thanks guys    The Saint

You should try to listen to them first if that is possible.  Judge the sound of the highs to your ears, compared to the sound you are used to with your current speakers.  The 6.5's may give you a lower freq response if you're currently lacking on some of the midbass up front.  Of course, you can get them and put them in, and after deciding which ones you like better, sell the pair you like least.  Sound quality is purely an individual decision, as long as the two brands are reputable and the RMS corresponds to the amp output.

The crossover settings will probably be different with one component set than another.  Start with the default settings, and tweak slightly as you listen to your music sources.  By the time you've done that a few times, you may not even know exactly what freqs they are set at, as I'm not sure where mine are now.  I just know that the sound is best now for my car and my ears.  But I'll no doubt be tweaking some more...that's all part of the fun.

Excellent advice above.  I might suggest for 5.25" speakers to try a high-pass setting of about 125Hz to 150Hz, and for 6.5" start at about 100Hz.  6X9" should run fine with no high-pass, but to avoid wasting amplifier power, try one set at about 40 to 50Hz.
