Kinda both. Some knock off brand caps are good. I had some Mysterious Power cap I got for $15 off a friend that worked just as well as the $150 Rockford cap he bought to replace it. Some caps are pure crap, alot of like Pyramid/Legacy stuff, they tend to (if their digital) have limited life on their LED display which can be annoying and I have seen a pyramid cap just blow up for no apparent reson though I'm not sure how it was wired as I didn't do it. All in all I've always thought of a cap as a cap, but it doesn't hurt to spend $60-$100 on one to make sure ur get'n a quality piece of equipment.

Capacitors just keep back up power to supply to an amp. Lightning audio is pretty good.

Here's something I learned from Haemphyst. When choosing a cap, look for the lowest ESR rating. (means equivalent series resistance) Lower ESR = more current. The caps will have a ESR rating number so go for the lowest number you can at the most reasonable price. And don't pay extra for the digital LED display if you can avoid it, unless you particularly want the extra little lights and numbers.

if i remember correctly, there was a post on here long ago discussing capacitors. I forget who posted it, but they said that all caps were made by one company, then distributed to all the car audio companies for labeling and customizing. but they are all the same. well, at least thats what they said. ill run a search, see if i can find that thread.
