After having this unit for about a year many of my cds skip.  i have tried these cds  on other cars and they dont skip. Is the anti skip technology in this unit not as good as lets say an eclipse, alpine or higher nak unit? Is it time to get another hu? If so can i have some recomendations, id like to spend about $700 or so thanks. Oh and the less grapichs the better

The CD40z is an older model Nakamichi and is a mid-line unit and it was discontinued two years ago.  If someone wants you to pay $700 for it you are being ripped off.  Brand new three years ago when it came out the 40z was less than $300 and you should be able to get an old stock for around $200.  The new Nakamichi's are the CD-400 (can be had for around $300 to 400) and the CD-700ii (now THIS one will set you back more than $700.)

The CD-400 is every bit as good as anything in the Eclipse line, IMO.  The CD-700ii is in my opinion the best built, best sounding car CD player in the world, bar none.

IMO if you go from Nak to Alpine you are gonna notice a signifigant loss in SQ

the 40z was $165. The budget for my next hu is about $700 . Oh and i would not call it $700 to blow more like spend to enhance my driving experience.

just curious...have you tried cleaning this Nak unit?  the pickup may indeed be starting to weaken and go out of tolerance, but more often than not problems like this stem from poor maintenance....

never.....ever.....ever... use one of those stupid cleaning kits in your car stereo, knocks the laser out of alignment, the reason it's not working may very well be that the cleaning kit screwed it up.   Seen it a million times in home and car audio.   Take it to a service center and have them clean it the right way.
