Hi this is my first post and im an extreme novice at car audio installation.  I decided to install an audio system in my car and got a good deal on everything off of ebay. I installed the amp, mids, and deck with no problem thanks to instructions included with the stuff. Today my subs arrived and they are the last thing I have to install, only thing is there are 4 posts on the back, 2 pos and 2 neg. What do I do? There were no instructions with the speakers. They are kicker comp vr's. My friend suggested that I run a wire between the two red posts and the two black posts but im not sure.  My amp is a single channel amp if that makes a difference. Thanks for your help.

What you have is called a dual voice coil sub. I am going to assume that they are dual 4 ohm voice coils. What is the make and model of the amplifier that you have? What is the model# of the subwoofers?

Sony XM-DS1600P5 1600w Mono Class-D Amplifier

here are the specs

  • 500 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
  • 900 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms (wire subs in parallel for a 2-ohm load)
  • Class D design
  • variable low-pass crossover (50-300 Hz at 12 dB per octave)
  • speaker- and preamp-level inputs
  • preamp outputs
  • variable bass boost (0-10 dB at 40 Hz)
  • subsonic filter (removes inaudible extreme low frequencies for cleaner performance)
  • remote bass control
  • requires 4-gauge power and ground cables
  • gold-plated connectors
  • 13-11/16"W x 2-1/4"H x 13-3/8"D

Ok Houston, we have a problem here. There is no way to properly wire the subs to the amp for maximum output of the amplifier. What you need is an amp that is designed and engineered to operate at 1 ohm mono, the one you have is only stable to 2 ohms. Here is the only safe way to wire your subs to this amp. I would recommend a different amplifier for you to use on these subs to give your your money's worth and more.

Can you describe the terminals on the subs a little closer, are there 4 wires coming out of the sub to 4 terminals or are there 2 wires going to 4 terminals?

Thanks, but I have one more question. My amp has two speaker hook up place. Should I just use one of those to do this? Or would it be doing the same thing to hook each speaker to its own place and then wire the remaining negative and positve posts together that are on the speaker?

The subs have four posts that push down and you can fit wires in them, they dont already have wires included. The two red posts are across from each other on the sub with one red post having a white dot. The two black posts are in the same configuration, also with one having a white dot. The two posts with the white dots are right next to each other.

What I was asking about is called a tinsel lead, it is the wire that goes from the terminal into the speaker itself. From what you have written about the dots on two of the terminals, it tells me that you indeed will have 4 tinsel leads, thus it is a dual voice coil speaker.

As far as the amp goes the terminals on the amp are there for ease of wiring connections. The two + and two - terminals are in fact one of the same. It does not matter if you only use 1 set of them.

Each post has one wire coming from it to the surface of the sub

So here is what I have done.

wired (-) terminal from amp to (-) postwith the dot

wired (+) teriminal from amp to (+) post with a dot

wired remaining (-) and (+) posts on speaker together

If you do this it will lead to a combined value of 1 ohm on the amp and most surely will lead to SAS or SSS. (smelly amplifier syndrome or smelly speaker syndrome). Wire it in the fashion that I posted. This is if you have wired all the remaining + and - leads on both subs together. I take it this is what you have done?

I did some kind of crazy crap. I will wire it exactly as it is pictured in the diagram.
