I have just installed a set of JL XR 3-way components in my 2003 mustang GT hard top. I got a set of Q-form kick panels off ebay and I hate them. They stick out way to far. I rub them everytime I press the clutch. Anyone have any other means of getting this installed in the car? I read something about someone putting the 6.5" woofer and 4" mid in the stock location and the tweeter up in the sail panel. But no pics. I really need to see some picutres or something so I can get some kind of idea as to what else i can do. Thanks guys -chris

I don't know where you're going to put the 4" speaker, but I have a set of 6.5" comps I just put in my '00 stang. The factory hole is a 5x7, so you'll need to make some kind of cover plate so you get a good seal. Also, on the plastic door panel skin, there is a plastic ring that goes around the inside of the factory grille that you'll probably want to cut off w/ a utility knife so your speakers don't hit it. I just used the plastic ring that the speakers were mounted on as a guide and made a panel out of 3/4" MDF to mount on the door. Because of where the support beam is inside the door and the window, you might need an extra spacer, or just use 1" MDF and counter-sink the speaker flush with the surface. I dont' know how big the magnet is on those XR's, but the freaking Polk MOMO MM6 magnets are freaking huge. It all worked out in the end though. I did that part. It's the Q form that I don't like. I really want to move the 4" and tweeter to a different location. I can't stand the kickpanel. Maybe if it was about 2" closer to the sides of the car.

If you have problems with the kickpanels you bought of ebay make some of your own and make them smaller if possible or maybe move them so you don't hit them every time you push dont on the clutch. The people in the fiberglass section should be able to help you.

I am unsure of my fiberglass capibilities. That's why I went with Q-forms, but I guess I am going to have to figure out something to do. Oh yeah, I have NO fiberglass capibilities that is why I am unsure.

So where did you put your xovers? I have mine on the kick panels. The tweets I put right on the sail panel, and I like them there a lot. Really brings up the soundstage. Other than your kick pods, you'd probably have to cut the door, or make an attempt at fiberglassing.

hey man, don't doubt yourself, i'm sure you can make you own 'glass parts if you do a little research, and you'll be proud of what you made... and you can say stuff like "yeah, i made 'em myself'". go for it man! you can do it.

my crossovers are still sitting on the floor pan in front of each seat. I haven't put them anywhere because I am not happy with the kick panels. I guess I am going to have to make my own panels.

go to the fiberglassing section,i use aluminum foil on the ones that have alot of "curves and contours" make it well big enough and mop it with just resin and get a form and then after it dries take it out and put 1 layer of glass and then cut it to the shape you want .and just ask step by step what to do,we'll help you out man.

I was sitting in the car the otherday, obsolutely hating the qforms. And came up with the idea, to leave my 6.5" woofers in the stock location, and put the 4" mid and tweeter in the map pocket on the door panels. I think I am pretty much just make a little face plate and screw it right to the door panel. Drill some holes and they are done. I can probably even put the crossover inside the map pocket. The angle even looks good for imaging, and would clear my leg and passenger legs.
