Sound deadening of back of box ?

Would it be fine to just put the deading on the back of a fiberglass box that is contoured to the sides of my trunk ? instead of pulling the carpet panel and putting it straight on the body. It sure would save time and trouble.

I could see it not working if you stuffed it around a box that wasnt, because the area it deadends' is alot smaller and the area needing it is greater.

so if there is minimal distance between the box & body then i would assume it would work, maybe not as effectively though, i dont kno exactly how the material works, but i would assume it absorbs more of the metal vibrations than a typical 'behind the carpet layer of foam'

then again this is just assumptions, please correct me if im wrong, just offering him some of my logic, hope its somewhat accurate

No, it wouldn't serve the same purpose.  The metal of the car body stresses with the sub frequencies, and the result is rattle and noise.  Damping the box will not also damp the sheet metal, even though the box is fitted snug to the carpeted surface.  Pull the carpet, damp all the sheet metal panels you can get to, then fit the box back in.

Thanks for the opinions. Yeah, the more i thought about and research i did i realized that the deadining material actually absorbs the vibrations from the metal body as well.
