I just bought an Resonant Engineering RE8 8" sub. It has a single 2ohm voice coil. I went with this sub because it hammers in a small enclosure, & its pretty light weight. It's rated to handle 175w peak. I need an amp that can run @ 2ohm mono that's rated @ less than 200w. Any suggestions?

Also, I currently have an  old Rockford punch 100 thats rated @ 50w x 2 @ 4ohms, 100w x 2 @ 2ohms, & 200w mono @ 4ohms. I don't think that it will handle the 2ohm mono load. Could I run it off of just 1 channel @ 2ohms without damaging the amp?

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you can run just one channel off an amp with no problem.  By connecting a 2 ohm load to one channel, you will get power output from just that one channel.  But it will only be 100 watts, probably not enough to get a satisfactory response from that sub.  You will need to use a Y-splitter to channel both left and right inputs to that channel so that you will get the full music signal.  Better, try to get an amp for that sub, and you could look for one rated at 200 watts (@2 ohm).  Your best bet is a mono amp, because very few stereo amps will allow a 2 ohm bridged load.  I would suggest searching sites for mono amps and look for the smallest one, then check the output.

The sub rating is 175 RMS, and will peak much higher than that.

I would agree that a mono sub amp sould be your best choice. Don't worry about having too much power, it is better than not having enough. Keep the gain as low as possible and I bet that it will sound just fine. A favorite amp of mine for a small mono 2 ohm load is the Concept CA275M. www.conceptconcept.com

What do you guy's think of the soundstream angina? I used to have a ref 500 back in the day & it was a solid amp. But I heard that soudstream was sold & purchased, and now the quality has gone to hell. Any input?

The Angina was a way cool little tiny amplifier. We had zero problems with them. And yes the quality has gone South on the new equipment. Another good ol' American line gone down the tubes.
