Subject: four hopfuly simple questions

1. I have an old 4 channel 35watt/channel pioneer deck and i was wondering if it was possible to hook it up as a 2 channel 70watt/channel by putting two outputs in parallel with one speaker. Is this ok or will i hurt something?

2. Im getting a couple of piezo horn tweeters that I was planning on running in parallel with a regular magnetic speaker. The spec sheet for the tweeter says that the impedance is high and says that it will work on 2,4, or 8 ohm systems. Im wondering if I need to worry about the tweeter dropping the over-all impedance of the system if I wire it in parallel instead of to its own output or would it be better to hook the two speakers up together in a crossover network.

3. Where is a good place to get inductors for making my own crossovers or a good place to learn how to wrap them myself properly?

4. Is there any big draw back to using multiple 47000microfarad caps  wired in parallel instead of one big cap for my sub?

I know im asking allot but i just wanted to get it all out at once.

Thanks in advance,
Warren

First, let's find something out:  Is this one car you're talking about?  Let's see the big picture.

Yeah this is four a 93 geo metro. the goal it to get two subs two mid range and 2 tweeters in there instead of a back seat :). the reason i want it to be two channels out from the deck is beacause im worried about space in my trunk becuase I've already got a 500 watt amp for the subs, a 750 watt powerinverter and a computer so im trying to avoid needing another amp for the mid range speakers, my car is very tiny.

Any time you wire parallel, you change the impedance of the load.  For the first two questions, a big NO to 1. and NO to 2.  Use a crossover if you are planning to do that.  Get your items from Parts Express.  And use as many caps in parallel as you want.

Try to find a place to install an amp, because you need one.  The head unit is not going to give you what you're looking for.

thanks for the quick answers, parts direct was excellent. i think what im going to do is try and run my high, mid and low all off the same amp and separate them with a crossover network. as long as all the rms watts of the speakers adds up to about the rms of the amp im ok right? justthought i should ask before i waste allot of time.

thanks again,
Warren

Two questions:  what amplifier do you have that you're planning this with (make & model), and are you still planning on adding those piezo tweeters?  Oh, and adding up all the RMS numbers isn't nearly as important as making sure the loads you put on the amplifier are correct.

im running a pyramid 500watt 2-channel amp. model is pb-450px. my subs are 100watt rms, 200watt max. i havent got the rest yet. i know if i run all this off one amp i will probabaly need a bigger one but i wanted to know if running all off the same one was a bad idea before i went shopping. i supose i could squeeze a second amp in if it will be a big improvment over doing it all in one i just really dont want to. i think i still want to use the piezo tweeters but its not a must, just an idea. sorry im so dumb about this, i new to most of it.

Yikes, worse than I feared.  Don't plan so much with that amp.  I can't find the model number with a search, but it will be lucky to power the 2 small subs you have.  If you don't push it past its limits, it may serve you in that capacity.  Take your time, stay with this forum in your spare time and read posts.  You'll be amazed at the info you will pick up.

actually the model number is pb-450px, dont know what happend to my typing skills there. anyway, will running the piezo tweeters be ok? what should i look for in an amp for running the mids and highs? also my pyramid has a signal/noise ratio of 95db. what does that mean? and yes i have read alot on this site and forum and have already learned a great deal.

thanks
warren

Pyramid ratings mean absolutely nothing.  Use the information on brands that you have picked up (and will in the future) on this forum when choosing your next amp.  If you get a four-channel you won't need to make crossovers.  Have you listened to a system with piezo tweeters in a small car, by any chance?

1) NO

2) NO

3)  You can try Radio Shack also

4) Why are you using capacitors?  Those are high pass filters.  You should be using a coil (inductor) for low pass filtering.

im not planing on using the caps as low pass filters, i was asking about them becuase i was going to use them inline with the power system to my amp

Trying to use small capaciters in parallel as stiffening caps for your main power is not a good idea.  If you need a stiffening cap, get a real one.  Why do you think you will need one?  Piezo tweeters are very harsh and shrill, especially in a small car, and can drive you crazy.  Some people like them, however.  Using Pyramid amps as anything other than doorstops is not good as far as I'm concerned unless you don't care AT ALL about sound quality.  Make sure if you are using Pyramid for your sub to run at no less than 4-ohms and to set your input gain carefully, unless you don't care about blowing your amp and/or subwoofers.  And please follow the advise already given on the answers to your questions.  Cheers.
