I'm somewhat familiar to electronics so installing a deck should be easy i hope. But i just have a few question about installing a basic CD deck into a '89 Honda Civic Si. I just purchased a deck from Best Buy and the salesmen recommended me to have it installed by them for $100. He recommended a few things to me which i didn't think was not nescessary. But tell me what you think. I don't know about newer decks out there but do you really needed a mounting kit to have a deck installed into a '89 civic? In the past, i never really needed one. My deck fit perfectly into place without a problem at all and then the dude at best told me that i will not be able to install it at all. (no offense to those who do work at best buy). What is the purpose of having the mounting kit? What does it do? And then he also recommended that i get this thing that is attached to the speakers so that if you have a 6 1/2" speaker, you won't blow it if you turn it up louder. What is this thing? Where and how can i find more info about it and how would it be installed? I have an idea how to install a deck but would some give me a overview list of an installation with its hardware kits and stuff that "ARE" nesessar. As far as i know, all you really need is the wiring harness adapter. I just want to know a "BASIC" installation set-up. Thanks in advance

Go to Crutchfield and enter your car model into "What fits my car?". You'll get a list of receivers that will fit. ------------- Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

In my Hondas, I was able to mount the head-unit into the stock location without a kit. However, the pocket usually has some special way to attach to the stock stereo and no longer fits properly. So, a kit may help with the cosmetic aspect. Personally, I like the idea of screwing the radio into the car's metal cage securely; the way these kits usually work, you push the radio into the plastic using a bracket, and it has a looser feel. I, too, have found that the salesmen try to push these kits, but I can kind of see why, after dealing with the pocket issue!
I eventually found a generic Honda kit that made it easier to add a decent pocket, while allowing me to continue to use the factory mounting location for the deck, although it's still not perfect. (There's a small gap underneath the deck. I'd appreciate it if someone has some better ideas! The only other idea I've run into is to get a full mounting kit for the Prelude, whuch has an awful, small pocket and then give up the factory mount.) Hopefully, since the Civic is a more common car than mine, you'll have better luck if you do end up getting a kit of some sort.
You can remove bass from speakers using "bass blockers" (capacitors), but most of the ones you can find at stores cut off at a pretty high frequency. I'm guessing this is what they tried to sell you. You might prefer the bass, and just don't turn it up so much that it distorts. These only make sense if you have a sub or other bass-heavy speakers.

You shouldn't need bass blockers for 6.5" speakers.

Man, for 100 bucks you should get life-time free head unit installs from Best Buy. This is too much to pay, for a 15 minute job, seriously. I have a 89 civic and installed a pioneer hu in it 3 years ago. I didn't need any mounting kits...it fit in there perfectly, but I never really fixed it with screws or anything (don't remember why now). But it's fine, after 3 years of driving this car daily and pumping music out of the hu, the only problem I really had is a prompt skip once I hit a big hole in the road, lol.

Well now...........i finally managed to install my new deck..........but..........the problem i'm facing now is.......i can't get no power to the deck. I've hooked everything up correctly according to the wire diagram. oh yea, i was correct about the installation. I don't need a mounting kit like Vbel says. It fits perfectly. Is there a way to test if i am getting power from the harness of the car? For about a minute,i had it working but it seemed to be like something was loose. I can't figure out where it is. Oh yea, i bought a wiring harness from Wal-mart for like $6. I'm thinking 1) it could be the wiring harness 2) maybe a short in the electrical or 3) i might just not have everything wired up corrrectly. Anyone have any clues or any ideas that this HU is not getting any power to it?

Your 3 main wires to power that unit up are constant 12 volts, 12volts switched, and ground. You should check your connections with a dmm(digital multi meter)

Those 3 main wires would be: Yellow = 12 volts, Red = 12 volt switch and black = ground from what i understand. Yep, connected those. ummmmm, still no power. Although i noticed that on the wiring harness that i bought has a ground wire on it. I don't think that you're suppose to connect that with the harness on the CD deck. Basically what i did is just took the ground coming from the decks harness and mounted the ground wire onto the chassis. Am I supposed to wire the ground wire from the deck harness to the wiring harness adapter?

well, that don't make any sense then because on the deck, the ground wire has this clip like wire (looks similar to this if you know what i mean by this discreption ----------------( and then i guess you're suppose to ground it to a chassis or something. The ground wire from the wire\ing harness adapter is just a wire with no attachment to it whatoever. If this is so, how ould i connect the two. The following is a picture discreption of what i mean. Ok you are right if there is not a ground on the other end then no it would not work but then again I am not there to see this. The place that you have grounded the radio make sure that it is clean of any rust or paint.

just check the fuses, if your using an adapter from wal-mart then you shouldn't have to worry abou the ground!! i think that plug you talked about is the antenna adapter, won't have an affect on whether or not the deck turns on....did you turn the key to "on" ?? does your cig lighter work??? it can only be a few things!! unbless the deck is screwed outta the box!!

Your chassis grounding point may not be good enough; you could try a different location.
Otherwise, double-check all of the connections. Here's where a multimeter comes in handy....
I assume it's not the obvious (turn on the ignition first!) :-)
