Subject: Help me get rid of the annoying vibration
Date Posted: August 14, 2004 at 10:43 PM

I have aftermarket speakers and hu in my car, and last night I also installed a 75x4 amp. Well, I'm in love with my system now (after I added the amp), but at high volumes and loud bass, my door panels and the rear deck vibrate and rattle, which produce an ugly distortion. My speakers are doing fine though. Is there some way I could get rid of this vibration?? The rattling kind of messes everything up :(

Take the door panels off and apply some sound dampening on the inside off the doors. Heres some brands of sound dampening you can buy.........dynamat, fatmat, raam mat......etc.etc. I dont know what to tell you about the rear deck vibrating.

Install some sort of sound dampening like fatmat, dynamat, brown bread, ext. I personally like fatmat.

How well does it work? Would it help remove all of vibration or just some? How hard is it to install?

How hard it is to install depends on how hard it is to remove the panels in ur car, usually easy but tricky. It is a foil and rubber combo that absorbs vibrations and sounds. Each brand has different versions of it, some versions are made to specifically reduce or stop vibrations and some are mainly to keep the sound in your car and reduce minor vibrations.

Oh, removing the panels for me is not a problem, I was more concerned about how and where to place it in the doors and how it should be mounted or what holds it in place anyway.

You place it newhere you can. It has a peel away backing that exposes the adhesive then you just press it on and use a roller to smooth it out.

I have heard that brown bread is good. You can stop vibration from your rear deck by putting some sound dampening material on it.

Yeah you can prob access it from ur trunk and you can just put it underneath if you can get it from the top.

I looked at Dynamat website and there they had a "speaker kit" which covers a 10x10 area where the door speaker is, and there is also a "door kit" which covers the whole door. Would I be ok with covering only the speaker or should I cover the whole door? All I want is to stop the vibration (as much as possible), don't really care much about road noise.

Try to buy the damping in as much bulk as you can.  Those "kits" made by Dynamat are lean and expensive.  On the door, you should cover the entire panel that the speaker is attached to.  On my car, after doing that I still heard vibrations from the outside of the door, and while the window was open.  So I covered the skin of the door, too.  That eliminated all bad sounds and made the speakers sound much better.  Its difficult to reach through the holes in the panel to get to the skin, but if you cut the damping in small enough strips you can get it covered pretty well.  I used 40 sq ft on just the two front doors, the rear deck, and the trunk lid (Taurus).  But it took care of all the rattling problems.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

To stop the rattling of the rear deck, would I have to cover the whole trunk or just the rear deck? What would work better, covering it from the top or bottom (the rear deck)?

Ideally you would want to cover it from the top.

Buy some bulk paks of dynamat x-treme and just start going after each rattle. It's easy to do.

Usually you can walk around and put your hand on each part that is making noise.

Cool. I am pretty satisfied with the cda7995. I also have an Eclipse but I can't really use it because my window will get broke again. The alpine the Alpine puts out a very clean signal because of the remote power supply.

As for the damping, also remember that the stuff weighs a lot so if you have a big box already lowering your suspension, it will add more weight. I added about 600lbs in Dynamat X. It adds up. Multi layers will help the most on the trunk lid but again, this will make it heavier. I had to beef up my springs quite a bit. If not, it would have easily broke my back if it fell closed.

Ha yeah, dern theives ruinin shiat again.

600lbs, thats incredible, that must hurt your cars performance a lot. My car would run so slow with that much added wieght.

Its amazingly fast actually. It gets better with age. I didn't hardly notice the weight because it is made to cruise carrying  a full load at around 100-140mph in europe. But I personally know that it can go at least 20mph faster thoughposted_image Nothing like the desert when you need to blow out the cobwebs.

I did install new stock springs in the rear so it wouldn't sag.

Good deal man. Ha, my car is lucky to see the governed speed as it is, a measily 118mph. My suspension is rock hard, i have bilstien coil overs all round and they dont allow hardly any bounce, but i like grippy race car like feel so its all good.

You would not need near that much. I would estimate 1 bulk pak/36sq ft of Dynamat Xtreme. Anything else, get 70sqft.

FYI:One bulk pak of Dynamat -X weighs 90lbs

5600RPM. Redline is 6000-7000. It would have shown RPM if I didn't have to cut and shrink the pic so much to get it to post.

Yeah my redline is right around 6500 but it sucks cause my final drive ratio blows. VW dint account for ppl who swap out crap for performance parts on there 2.0 L engine models.

Yeah, MB did a great job with the gear ratios in the 4 speed 722 automatic. Do you have shorter wheels and tires than stock? That would definitely affect your final drive gear ratio.

Nah, if nething the overall size is bigger in diameter. I ottienger 18's paired with some Kuhmo Ecstas (not sure what size), but they fill the wheel well with just enough room to spare.

Wasn't your oil temperature a bit high when you were going 150mhp in that picture?  Is that how it normally runs?

A bulk pack of Dynamat Xtreme doesn't weigh anywhere near 90 lbs.  A bulk pack contains 9 18" x32" sheets.  There is no way a sheet of that size weights 10lbs.  I lifted 90 lb dumbells in the gym today and handled a bulk pack a few weeks ago.  They aren't even close.  Maybe you made a typo? ;-)

I don't know what I was thinking.  1 bulk pak is about 30-50lbs.  I'll be picking up 3 bulk paks next week for installs so I'll post the exact weight then.

Hurtado, did you mean my oil pressure? It is always at 3 bar when driving. When idling it sits a little lower.

Are you sure that's the symbol for oil pressure?  Whatever it is I don't think it should be at the max but you were pushing your car to its limits.

Does the weight to the sound dampening material differ significantly with brand?  I can't accurally recall what the 100sq. ft. from e-bay weighed but it did feel like it was more than 30lbs.

B-quiet specifies on e-bay to be 0.3lbs/sq.ft.

Black Mat     .56 lb./ft²

Dynamat     .45 lb./ft²

Brown Bread     .40 lb./ft²
