i saw an infomercial for an automatic wire stripper last night and it looked like the dopest thing ever. i hate nothing more than to sit in a car in a weird position and spend 10 minutes stripping wire.

has anyone used one of these wire strippers and if so does it work like they show? i think that it could be a tool that every person who works in electronic could use if it works like they say ( i know how infomercial people are)

i bought that thing, , it broke in 2 weeks,  half the time it didn't work.   Nothing is better than the standard radio shack strippers

Yeah, I got one too.  Hasnt broke yet, but it dont work quite as easilly as they make it look.  Still cant beat a standard pair of strippers.

Most automatic strippers are pieces of crap.

I like my auto stripper that I picked up from Parts Express.  I've used it exclusively for all my wire stripping needs and it has performed flawlessly.  You need to be realistic with your tools and can't expect to strip 4 Ga wire w/ something designed only for 10-22 Ga.

If you can find the auto stripper made by GB Electrical Inc. That tool will auto strip standard sized cables with consistent performance, without wire damage.

There are two versions of the auto stripper, buy the one which looks like a standard plier set. The other one is not consistent in its performance.

As TonyPTX stated, the user needs to be realistic as to the application and the material being used.

I haven't used auto stripper, I use the original good old wire strippers, and a knife.

Do those auto stripper fit on a 0/1/4/8 guage power / ground wire.

the auto stripper i had was junk. didnt cut through the casing, just stretched it. i just use a stripper i found at home depot in an electricians kit. it only has stripping part and a cutter, have to use another for crimping but the stripper/cutter is the best i have ever used.

the stripper i used was like this one from radioshack. its total crap. i wasnt using it for anything like 4gauge wire or anything, nothing larger than 16 if memory serves. like bp_viper says, they just stretch the insulation. after looking at the one from parts express shown above, it does look like that is a bit better quality, also im assuming that if they made the blade actually shap enough to cut insulation the radioshack one would work descently.

One of the other factors people must keep in mind is that some cabling use very rubberized insulation.

Anyone who has used such cabling knows that they stretch, and stretch, regardless of the strippers used.
