Can you hook up a 4ohm sub to a home receiver thats rated at 8ohm to play at low volume for break in? Or would that somehow be bad for sub?

Kevin is right, that is in general not a good idea.  Home theatre amps are rated for 8-ohms (some for 6-ohms) minimum.  And there are a few home amps that can handle lower loads, but be sure to check the owners manual for your amplifier and do not load it below it's rated specs!
