Topic: One sub or two?

Subject: One sub or two?
Date Posted: August 20, 2004 at 10:41 AM

Why do most systems have 2 subs?

Yes I realize there are those that have to have 15, but lets talk about the living here.....

I have an ideal location for just 1 sub. I have had 2 in the past, but never really considered.....WHY?

Thanks.posted_image

I don't think that it is a must to have 2 subs or more at all, i think it is the trend, but definitely not a must. Personally I went for two subs because of the symmetry you get with two subs, so I guess for me it is about looks.

Multiple driver systems is both a trend invented by retailers and speaker companies to increase sales dollars, and a necessity for those trying to generate higher SPL numbers.  A dual speaker setup will produce about 3db more than a single of the same speaker.  Is it "necessary?"  Not in the least.  A single sub is all that is required to provide low-bass sound reinforcement.

Thanks very much.

I can be at peace now knowing I am complete and one with the world with my one sub. posted_image

I cannot recall ever hearing a Boston Pro 12.5, but i have heard other Boston subs and some of them sounded very good.  Yeah, i agree with everyone two subs is a gimic.  You have two speakers everywhere else so its a no brainer you NEED two subwoofers.  Right.  My advice has always been to buy one really good sub, rather then two cheaper ones.  Its not about quanity, its about quality.

Just feed the sub the proper power, and put it in the proper box and you will be way happyer than 2 subs crammed into box's too small for them, and not very much power being supplied to them.

Iv been running 1 12" for a few months now, , its plenty off bass, shakes the ground, and has no phase issues with interfeering subs around it.

I have to echo everyone's opinions here.  One sub is enough.  Sure, when I had my larger box with 2 12" MTX drivers it could get slightly deeper and louder than my single 10" now.  However, the new subs takes up less room, draws less power, has better quality sound, and gets as loud as I need it to get.  I don't think I'll ever go back to a 2-subwoofer configuration.

i only bought 1 10" as well, i dont see any reason why i need huge SPL numbers, coming from tens. if i want SPL later i'll pick up a 12 i was thinking 2, but again i dont need 2, its just typical to see it.

When some hip-hop machine with 22 18" subs blended nicely with a pair of 4" mids and 1" tweeters......comes up behind me and all I hear is BOOM BOOM BOOM......da BOOM BOOM BOOM, I feel at that moment as if I had died and gone to hell in my sleep. I hate it.

But some fine bass to go with everything else is just total ear candy.  One sub it shall be.

My two cents....

Nothing wrong with SPL (2 x 12's or 10's) as long as the system as a whole is balanced & tuned properly, not over powered with Bass.

Personaly im all about the BOOM BOOM BOOM. If I only had one sub it would have to be a 15" or a 18". I cant imagine having only one 10" lol.
