I'm thinking of building a "false floor" box in my hatchback (for stealth).  Assuming the sub is flush with the box, is there anything wrong with laying carpet over the sub and just letting it play through the carpet?  That way I wouldn't have any grill showing to tell the world there is something worth stealing in the car.

Thanks,

Mike

Carpet will do nothing more than muffle sounds, but that's not much of a problem with bass anyway. So yeah, it's fine.

You will also need to sink the sub face a couple inches deeper than carpet. But I'm sure you thought of that. I've seen a few false floor setups like this except they only had ports firing through carpet. The subs were completely enclosed in custom enclosures.

If you are creating a false floor for the sub I recommen installing some type of sunken grill.  You can cover the grill with carpet afterwards.  The reason for the grill is to protect the sub from objects that may fall on the floor.

Thanks for the replies.

I've actually got the box almost finished.  I was trying to decide whether to have the subs facing into or out of the box.  The box isn't deep enough for the drivers to fit in totally unless I do somethinf radical, as the interior height is only 2.5", overall outside height is only 3.75".  I inverted the subs low into the box using some spacers so as little of the magnet/frame is exposed.  I felt the smalled amount of the subs showing would be easier to hide than the full diameter of the cones.

So, I'm thinking of making some "hats" out of carpet that will sit over the exposed motor/frame of the subs.  Then, the carpet on the top of the box will have circular cutouts that will fit over the "hats" so the enclosure is uniformly carpeted.  Subs will just fire backwards through the carpet.....  That's the idea anyway, whether I can make that look halfway decent is another story :-)  I may make a framework of metal mesh to hold up the "hats" and protect the subs, we'll see.

Thanks again,

Mike
