I have a 1998 Volkswagon Beetle with a stock am/fm/cass head unit. The cassette player and fm radio work fine. AM, however, is another story. There is very poor reception on all AM stations. I know that this vehicle has an amplified antenna, however I was wondering if anyone knew of any way this issue could be related to that antenna. Thanks for any help.

Do you listen to AM stations, or are you just curious?

it could if the required 12 volt out to activate the amplified antenna wasn't being sent out.... meter the harness at the back of the radio....    or you may have a bum signal amplifier module.....

Thanks for the help. Does anyone know where the signal amplifier is located. For some reason i think that it is in the base of the antenna, but I am not sure. Once again thanks.

There is two different antenna adapters made for your vehicle;  one is plain and the other has a built in signal booster.  It has one blue wire attached to it that needs to be connected to the power antenna lead from your HU.  It costs about $11.  This should solve your problem.

raydawg357,  he said he is using the OEM stock head unit......

cemala16,  you are using the factory stock radio aren't you?   or did you put in an aftermarket deck?
