same box different sub

Right now I'm using a old 12 RF subwoofer the old Punch type Z series.  It's just entry model, and i haven't bee the happiest with it.  One of my friends offered me a mid/higher model Clarion 12" subwoofer for $100 canadian.  I was wondering what you all thought about Clarion's name and how well they can perform.  Also i wanted to know if i could stay with my own box and amplifier.  Right now my friend is running 250watts rms to his subwoofer and it's pounding great.  My amplifier is an Alpine MRP-T220 it's a 2/1 channel power amplifier 70Wx2 rms at 2ohms, 14.4V and 50Wx2 rms at 4ohms, 14.4V.  250watts max.  So i'm not sure if that will do.  He's using a sony amplifier so i'm not sure how efficient it is. 

I was wondering if I'd have a problem under-powering the subwoofer.  Could it blow it or not be good to do?  And if my ported box would be good enough to still be used?  My friend doesn't know his exact model, but I can post that later on when i talk to him agian.  I just wanted to know if it was worth buying or maybe just waiting and buying a whole new higher end subwoofer with a good name.  Thanks

I wouldnt do it. The Clarion sub won't play very well with that small alpine amp. What dont you like about your current sub setup?

i would think a larger amp would help you with the sub/box setup you have now you are still underpowering the sub you have.   I would rather reccomend over powering a sub then underpowering one

i'd agree with the others saying you should invest in an amp. im sure that punch can handle more than just 140watts @ 2ohm, infact i would be suprised if it couldnt' handle anything under 200,

I'd say if your not happy with your current setup, there isnt anything to lose if you buy the clarion, i dont know how well the quality will be in comparison, but if you arent happy with what you got, this will at least let you know how good a clarion sub performs.

1 thing though, chances are your current box setup, if its made to the specs of the RF 12" probably will not be as efficient for the clarion, each sub has its own displacement in the box and optimum enclosure size to work in, and chances are the 2 subs arent equal for displacement or enclosure specs, so that would require making a new box to get your moneys' worth.

overall, if your not happy, i'd switch to a bigger amp and followup by buying a new sub for that amp. if you go to buy a new amp, have some goals set as to what you want in your stereo, something as general as SQ over SPL, and narrow it down to a certain powerhandling range, even box enclosure size could be important to you. the more things you want out of a sub, the easier it will be to narrow it down to something that should please you more than your RF.
