Are these good subs?, i'm thinking of getting 2 12 inchers. if so what would be the best route to take on the amp? im not sure which one would do best for the job?

Alpine type R are decent speakers, yes.  Since you're talking about subs, I suggest a mono amplifier.  Type R's are rated for 300 watts RMS I believe, so I suggest you need an amp capable of 600 watt RMS into whatever impedence load you create with the subs.

Type R subs have a nice balance between SQ and SPL, and they are price is good, unless you buy them from circut city where therices are a little steep (but you can often times geta free sub box or something, depending on what promotion they happening to be running.

I havent had good luck with tyoe r subs. i will reccomend the hell out of thier co-ax sets but i am really not a big fan of the subs.
