help building box

I am building my first box ever and this is what it is going to look like.  I am basically buiding a hatchback sealed box and extending it to put a plexi window on it and red led's.  My question is since i am extending the enclosure do i need to vent or port in and can i do that on top of the box.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Excuse my stupidity i normally do alarms.  i am using a jl audio 8w7 and this is going in a scion xa.

Yes if you are going to put a plexi window in that extension you will need to Vent the box. Basically you are building a Bandpass Box and you will need to follow the bandpass rules on venting it.

If you want it to be a sealed enclosure then I would suggest taking the plexi and cutting a nice pattern in it may be the Scion Symbol or the JL Logo....as long as the front of the sub is vented when you are finished, and it also needs to be a large area of the plexi gone so the sub can move and vent...

The only down fall to my second suggestion is that there is a possibility that when you cut out the plexi that it will have a whistle sound when the sub hits...If you still want to do it just make sure NOT to leave any sharp edges from the cuts..Try to round off all the edges and make them as smooth as possible..

Other than that it looks like a nice design and I hope it comes out good for you...

Also the piece of plexi you use will need to be at least 1/2 " in thickness so it wont flex when the sub hits..
