I am upgrading the factory system in my '99 Ford Explorer (4-Door) and I need some advice on installing the sub. amp.

I would like to mount the amp in the rear quarter of the car behind the molding (this is where the OEM amp is). What is the best way to mount the amp in terms of minimizing vibration/noise and maximizing stability of the mounting point? Should I have material between the amp and the metal surface of the quarter panel? Where is it safe to drill into (I don't want to accidentally drill through to the outside of the car?

I have the same (Explorer Limited) and I need to know how to add an amp. I am going to run a power wire from the battery and ground under the seat where I will put the amp. I need to know how to hook up the remote turn on lead, specifically. Any suggestions?

mcmahonjonathan: Never put anything on top of the heat sink of an amp. You will most likely burn it or the amp can overheat very easily. Use srtap metal ( the kind that you get from the manufacturer's when you buy a CD player ) and cut it to length to use as mounting tabs for the amp. Chances are the amp you are installing is not the same size as the OEM amp so you will need to use these tabs to be able to use the OEM amp mounting spot.

hrbib21 : You can use the switched ignition as your remote turn on lead.

Thanks. I'm not sure I know how to find the ignition wire though. Are you talking about in the stereo wiring harness or the ignition wire itself?

Either one will suffice. The Yellow/Black wire on the radio harness will work as well as the GREEN/ PURPLE at the ignition harness will do the exact same thing. It will probably be easier to get to the radio harness than take apart the lower dash area of the Ford.

I did find the stock amp on the right side wall. I'm still struggling to get off the paneling (without tearing it up). Would it be better for me to patch into the turn on lead for that amp?

If possible do that, but if you can not access it then run a new wire for the remote lead.
