Hey everyone! I have a quick question. I have a pair of JL Audio 8w3s with Dual 6 ohm voice coils and a 12w3 with dual 6 ohm voice coils, I want to run them all off the same amp, and the way I'm going to run them the amp will see a 4 ohm load. Seeing as the 8w3s handle 125 watts RMS and the 12w3 can handle 250 RMS (although I've heard that JL's subs can handle alot more), what kind of amp should I get and how big? I want decent quality and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg to get it. Thanks for your time guys!

personally i would get two small amps since the frequency response of the subs are differeny. plus you could run the 8"s in stereo and the 12 in mono

I'd like to know how you think you're going to achieve a 4-ohm net load... unless you're building a pretty sophisticated passive crossover network with impedence shifting coils...

go with rknj01 and split them up on two different amps , mostly because of frequency issues. I wouldnt even worry about wattage now because like you said , they can handle alot more. If you put the 8s and a 12 on the same amp output , you may get frequency cancellation and end up with less bass than you intended. Remember , sometimes less is more

I think I might go with 2 smaller amps, but as for how i figured a 4 ohm load...I referred to the JL Audio's Data sheet for their subs... https://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/pdfs/12W3_MAN.pdf on page 2 it says "W3 Voice Coils In Series" and then it has one sub, 2 subs, and 3 subs in series. I will have 3 subs and according to JL by wiring the voice coils in that way I'll be presenting my amp with a 4 ohm load off my 3 6 ohm DVC subs...I'm kind of a newbie to DVC subs but I'd expect JL Audio to know what they are doing. Thanks Guys

https://cgi.ebay.com/dll?ViewItem&category=39744&item=5723646466&rd=1 would I be able to use an amp like this to power the 12w3 bridged and then use the other 2 channels to push the 8w3s? thanks all!

Ah, I missed that there are three subs.  I thought you said you had two 8" DVC @ 6-ohms.  If you have three, wire each for 12 ohms and then parallel these to the amp for a net 4-ohm load.  But, since your three subs do not match, I would not wire them off the same amp.  A 12" wired in parallel with an 8" will overpower the 8"... unless you use a passive crossover and send different frequencies to each one.  Use two amps, low pass your 12" at 80Hz and bandpass your 8's in stereo between 80 and 120Hz.  High pass your mains at 120Hz.

I've seen people use the JL 450/4 "Big Block" to wire 3 subs much like this...he used channels 1 & 2 bridged for the 12w3 and then channels 3 and 4 for his 8w3s, I absolutely loved the sound. Unfortunately I don't want to spend the money for the JL 450/4 amp so I was thinking maybe that Rockford 501x? just a thought about it, also I have access to a 12w3d4 and a 12w3d6, which would I be better to use for wiring flexability? thanks!

Im not too familiar with the newest RF amps but if thier as good as the specs listed on the web site , it sounds like you'll be able to power everything you have there. I still say you shouldnt put all 3 subs on the same frequency tho , thats just my opinion.  Unless the amp has built in crossover maybe , I didnt notice but if it does then you should be able to adjust all the subs acordingly. If no x-over , I would suggest putting one in the mix.

Yep, I'd say that's a perfect fit.  Here's a comparison of some RF amps that would work for your subs.

It'll "sound great" as long as the enclosure is correct, and the car metal is damped properly, and the deck is a good one, and you have good speakers to play the mids and highs, and they are amplified, and the gains are set correctly...........etc.etc.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
