A friend recently gave me a Kenwood KGC-4042A eq and a Pioneer DEX-P78 deck. He said they were "fried" and were going to throw them away anyway. I don't know a lot about car audio but thought it would be a shame to let these two pieces of equipment go to waste. I did a little looking around on the web to try to find ways to hook them up to see if they work, but did not have much luck. I am not really concerned about an in depth procedure for installation in a car. I just want to know if I can hook up these things to see if they will even turn on since he said they were "fried", so I can decide whether or not to even bother maybe buying more equipment later. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, sorry if this is a repeat question!

If you have access to a good car battery (out of the car)you could do whats called bench test the units. You'll need some test leads with alagator clips preferably. Take first the black ground wire from the radio and connect it to the negative post on the battery. Then take the Red and Yellow wires together and connect them to the positive post. This should get you power to turn on the units. If you do have lights and power , then try connecting a speaker to each of the speaker leads on the radio one at a time while a CD is in. (or the radio with just static). Good luck. The EQ should have the same color power wires.
