I am looking at purchasing either an Alpine Mrd-500 mono amplifier, or an MTX 6500D mono amp. Both share similar prices and power ratings, although the MTX has slightly more power. Which one is a better amp? They would most likely be powering a pair or Alpine 12" inch type R subwoofers, but not necessarily. Any Opinion would be greatly valued.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it is broke, than feel free. And if you can't think of anything else to do, chrome it!

mtx i think is a hard outputting amp meaning more power.

mecp certification is not always needed. I have it and it has not helped me out at all. my experience out shines it.
I have installed both and the Alpine has more options as far as " techno gadgets" are concerned. The power for both are highly under rated ( proven by their birth certificates ). They are very comparable to each other in power, price and also looks. The only edge is that the Alpine has the computer programmable features where the MTX does not ( MTX has the analog version ). If you like chrome and black then the MTX will be better but the Alpine's sleek silver is pretty impressive as well.

I had the same dilema. Here's how I saw it: "Sure the Alpine looks cool and may be easier to setup (initially) because of it's digital controls, but if there are more "gagets" built in then doesn't that mean more "gagets" that could break?"
I almost bought the alpine because it had that cool digital display and showey look, but I thought about it and I never had an MTX that did me wrong. I picked the MTX. I'll tell you how that turned out in a week or so :)
P.S. Maybe if you buy the extended warranty for the Alpine you'd have piece of mind with all the "gagets" that came along with it. (just a thought). But then again it wouldn't put the two in the same price range anymore then would it. More warranty = More $$$ .

i have not owned an alpine amp but i do know for a fact that with the right radio(maybe even the wrong radio too) that the mtx 6500d will put a bruisin' those alpines quick if you're not careful. i've seen this amp almost blow the cone out of those speakers with out even getting warm. so i'd have to say go with the mtx.

The curious one
Hey does anyone here know if the new 2003 Mono amps by MTX come with subsonice filters? I know that last years didn't and that's why I didn't get one.
