How do the wires connect?
I am such a rookie. I removed a Kenwood tape deck from my gf's 1986 Volvo 240. I cut it free from a mess of wires. I want to install a newer Kenwood CD player. It came with it's own wiring harness. Problem: Seems like there are 1 too many wires coming from the car. From the car I have, 4 speakers wires, an antenna lead with a red wire splitting off from that, a yellow, a black, and a green wire. The yellow black and green wires are all silver inside when stripped.
From the harness that comes with the deck, there are 8 speakers wires, 2 blue wires that say antenna and have different metal ends, a red, a black, and a yellow wire.
Seems like black goes to black, red to red, and yellow to yellow. That leaves a green one hanging from the car, and tha deck didn't go on. Blew fuses trying to switch wires around. What is the right way to connect this?
if you have a test light get one also you'll need a battery(a little on like AA) use the test light to find the car's constant power should turn on your test light all the time wether the key is in or not.. connect the decks yellow to it. then find the car's switched power. this will only power up when the key is in one of the two positions(accesory position or run position)connect the decks red wire to that. then you'll need to find ground. without a dmm (digital multi meter) you'l l need to do it this way. hook your testlight to power and touch the wires until the test light turns on. this will be the ground. hook up the decks ground(black to that. now your deck should work. (turn on) if you have trouble with finding any of the three main wires (switched power red, constant power yellow, ground black)check all the fuses to see if any are burned out. as far as the green wire it may be for the original radio's display or for dimmer or for power antena. if there is power at it just tape it up and don't use it. chances are that you won't need it. you'll only need the three wires to make any after market radio work. once you found all the power and ground use the battery(AA) to touch the other ones until you find all your wires. fl,fr,rr,rl. the battery will send a voltage through the speaker but not enough to hurt your speakers. listen for the click. good luck.
Here is your cars wire diagram. You should be able to figure it out from this. If I remember there are a total of 2 factory harness back their that contain these wires. Just make sure that you dont get the two black wires confused. You should get a continuity tester to check which one is the ground.
