i'm going to be installing a radio in a 1990 ford probe.  i have seen dash kits available but do i really need one or will the new radio just slide in with it's sleeve?

You'll need one.  Metra 99-5556.  The '90 Probe used dual DIN OEM systems as I recall.

I don't think so... but it has been a while!  I do remember you will have to pull the ashtray to get to the bottom mounting screws for the radio...
