if I was willing to lose the door chimes ,will a standered gm stereo harness work for the stereo? what other problems are there when totaly removing the factory stereo(not relocating it just getting rid of it) will I lose any other functions besides the door chimes? I hate door chimes any way. thanks adam

I believe a Metra 2001 or 2003 (I forget which one) wiring harness will "work" for that car but I really wouldn't recomend it. You also dont have to relocate your radio do get the door chime back. Metra makes a piece/harness that integrates into the factory databus system that has a built in speaker. The piece is approx. $60 at circuit city and is worth it I dont know about the price elsewhere. It will give you your doorchime, reminder to turn off your parking lights, warning tones for if your check engine light etc. turns on, and switched power for your aftermarket radio. The factory harness does not have a switched power wire in it. The stock radio truns on via a digital signal from the databus system. Other than that just a warning, if you have never taken apart a cavalier you might want to find a friend who had done one before or have a shop do it. The trim piece around the radio does not pull off. You have to take the top of the dash off and take the bolts out of the top of the trim around the radio.
Hope this helps

Money is just paper
Power is fleeting
But your word is everything,
If your word means nothing,
You are nothing...think about it
you can either spend $60 and not have any worries, or spend hours wiring, and then wondering. you can buy the "box" ,as i call it, from circuit city that imitates the factory deck and ebay your factory deck (if it works properly) for more than you paid in parts. the shortcut in this case(not buying parts) i think would cause more problems in the long run so your best bet would be to install it properly, and factory decks arent cheap so it might pay for itself if you are willing to sell it.
good luck
remember adamaudio77.... there's two ways to do everything and one of them's properly

thanks for all the replys and comments but what i was looking for was some cold hard facts. wireing does not scare me. and I am not about to spend $60 for a harness just to retain some buzzers wich I always remove from my vehicles anyway, i cant stand those anoying things. does the radio controll any other functions!? finding + 12 and a switched source is easy ,are the speaker wires at the radio, really i dont even need them their i can find them some were els also. all i need to know is what else is controlled by the radio besides the radio and the chimes, buzzer, noise makers. thanks for all the concern though. adam p.s doing things properly dosnt mean doing what is easy or what every body else does. there are manys ways(more than two) to do alot of things properly!
