Well, my wife blew up the set of PCE 6.5" MB quarts I bought her. I need a set of fronts that will get loud and take abuse from my wife. I was first concerned about getting her a nice pair of fronts but now I jsut want something that can get  loud and can handle her abuse. Thanks  (My wife thinks clipping is something she does to her dogs toenails)

What kinda power were you throwing at those speakers, you may wanna suggest putting an amp on the speakers and then setting the amp so it doesnt matter how loud she turns it, even if she pins the dial she wont blow em. Its amazing how much phsyco-acoustics will take over and if she thinks she has it really loud because the dial says its almost at the top then she will precieve it as loud. Thats just a thought.

not a bad idea. I only had 75x2 running to them, older MTX amp i had laying around. I bet she turned the gains up and the distorion of the MTX amp blew them. I should have never let her see me adjust the gains, if she had no clue they existed she'd have never blown them..

LOL.  Yeah that'll take a speaker out cold.  JBL makes a 125 watt rms 6.5".  Component set I think.  Looks rather mean and can handle the power rather easily.  Yeah glue that gain control down so she can't adjust it anymore.  posted_image

I don't think anything could have faced that. Quart makes some of the toughest components out there.

There is no such thing as an indestructable speaker. However there is an easy fix for the situation, Take her keys away.

Amping will help but if she still turns the radio up the speakers will still blow, the signal will clip and distort and will just be amplified.

Also - tell her not to touch the bass boost, loudness, eq or anything else. All these things can lead to severe clipping as well.

One thing that might help somewhat - do you have a high pass crossover on those components? A 100hz high pass crossover will greatly improve the power handling of a 6.5" component set.

But even then - in the words of the author at bcae.com - can't find the direct quote but it went something like this - over or under powering rarely blow speakers - idiotic behavior blows speakers.

Make her understand how the system works first. Sort of like learning how to drive or does she use the hood ornament as a crosshair?

Do what I did to my daughter's system: locktite the gains in place (on an old amp, that is!)

I agree with alpine guy...make her pay for new ones...might be mad at you for a little while but she will respect what you tell her about her system from now on

i forgot to say that if you do this...good luck...it didn't work for me with my fiance...i just want to see someone else out there get away with it so that i may live vicariously through their manhood

Seriously, I'd make her buy new ones. It will make her realize 1) gain isn't a volume control and 2) careless behavior breaks equipment.

Make sure she understands the gain contro is not a fun toy..it is not a loudness switch   haha     then get some new one's and if she breaks them...she can blare the rears till they die

I am surprised that no one has suggested this yet:

6 inch speakers usually blow  because of too much bass.  You can solve this problem by either setting a highpass filter on the amp or deck, set it above 120 hz.  Even better, add a sub to the system, then crossover your fronts at 250hz. She will have to make ear drums bleed before a pair of MB Quarts will blow crossed over above 250hz.  I work at a car audio shop and this is what we do for customers who keep blowing nice speakers.

Deck -     Eclipse CD8443 - $475
Speakers - Boston BAZ5 - $1000
Amp -      Alpine MRV-T420 - $400
Car -      1988 PLymouth Colt - $450, it's been rolled!

LOCKTIGHT!!! that's pretty funny

I'm going to start making 'block-off plates' for popular brand amps, installers can use these for problem customers!

The "warranty void if removed" stickers  would work wonders over the holes too. Stick a few of these over the gains and crossover

You guys are too funny.  My wife likes the sound in her van and I don't have to worry about an amp because she don't like it loud.

Wait until your my age, xTimx.....my wife would be thrilled if it were once a week!  posted_image

And this is a situation where my yet-to-be-designed-and-patented invention would work really well........a control attached to the deck that you can set to limit volume.

And oh yeah....did you say she's your ex?  Hmmmmmm, wonder why?  lol

rofl - Yeah, I can't say I've heard of any situation where the male withholding sex works for any extended period of time.

In fact, that's probably the worst idea I've ever heard. I can just picture that conversation at my house.

Me: "If you change the dial I'll withhold sex."
Her: "Ok"
Me: "damnit."

first of all kfr01, I feel bad for you.

Second, If she's his wife even if she pays for the new speakers, he will prolly pay for them. Unless things are changing and people aren't goiong with joint accounts anymore, not surprising with the "standard" pre-nup.

Third, consider a new wife

Fourth and last resort, locktite the gains. If she figured out how to break it by upping the gains she's gunna figure out how to break it no matter how you hook it up with crossovers and such, are you sure she just doesn't hate you?

The general public are either just smart enough or just dumb enough to figure out how things will break and there is no way to fix that.
