Subject: ID recomended Infinite baffel? Opinions?

OK, I talked to several reps this week each telling me how their equipment (sub) is supperior in every way to all thetother manufacturers (it got me nowhere). I've been leaning torwards 4 IDQ subs for airspace and SQ. I called Image dynamics today and to my surprise I was told the best setup i could go with would be 4 ID V.3 12" in an infinite baffel in my trunk. For those that don't know that means I would put a 1" think board where my trunk meets the back of my rear seat with the subs installed in that board firing at my back. This would inturn transform my trunk into one big box. This sounds great becasue I will have a ton of space in my trunk to now mount my amps, battery, etc. What's the opinions of the seasoned pros here? I've never done an infinite baffel, its sounds great but what's everyones opinions? Its a convertible mustang, so the subs would be mounted 6 to 10" from where the top folds down. Im up for anything, if you guys say its a good idea, Im going to start building!!!

Dosn't sound like too good of an idea too me, , i think ported would be your best overall set up.   I love those subs, tight and loud as hell!

I think IB sounds like a great idea for SQ w/ that driver. Any sort of box in trunk is going to lead to some funky cabin gain and cancelation. IB will minimize that. BTW. I love my IDQ. Go for it.

I have tried a set of ID's in a infinate setup I was truly amazed that they could produce the SQ as much room as they were in

Ya, im going to go with it. Any sugestions on how to set up an infinite baffle for best results? Tips/Tricks? Like seal holes in the trunk? Glass the trunk, anything along those lines?

Tips for IB installation: Seal the baffle board and the drivers in place with silicone rubber cement (or some other air-tight sealant.)  The fastest way to destroy the sound in an IB setup is if the fronts and rears of the speakers can interact with each other.  Remove the interior treatment (carpet, etc.) from the rear shelf to help elimitate vinrations.  Be careful with amplifier selection and do not exceed the power handling capability of the speaker (I usually keep a safety margin of at least 2X between amp RMS output and loudspeaker RMS rating.)

Just out of curiosity , do I understand that your installing 4 of the IDQ 12s in the trunk of a conv. Mustang? You are building an SQ system right? I only ask as Ive seen an 84 conv. Mustang and the guy had a simular set up in the trunk but he was lucky to "Cram" 3 - 12" subs in an IB board. Im not familiar with the dimensions on the newer mustang trunks. Are they big enough to get all 4 subs across? That is if I understood you correctly.

reguarding the IB mounting, do subs have to be designed from ground up to support a ib installation, or can most subs take advantage of this?

I dont believe most subs will work well in an IB set up. I know that several companies make special subs just for that situation. Some of them are called "Free Air" subs or IB subs. Cerwin Vega used to make some decent IB subs.

i know of the free-air term, i was going to buy a set of kicker 6x9's (labeled as free-air; they are discontinued though) that were apperently able to sound like a 10". thats where i first heard of Free-air.

Im sorry /r7 , I miss understood you. Most 6 x 9s Ive ever handled work on the concept of free air design. Is the Kicker 6 x 9s like subwoofer 6 x 9s only? Either way , they all pretty much work the same in an IB set up.

"Free air" or "infinite Baffle" results in a very low Q, which creates a boomy sound.  This is why smaller speakers like 6X9s can create extended low bass, but power handling and accuracy are sacraficed.  Any speaker can be mounted any way the user chooses; most speakers have better performance in specific configurations.  As long as the user understands and accepts the limitations and incorporates these into the system design, you can do pretty much anything with any speaker (short of using a tweeter as a subwoofer.)

i saw them on ebay, and a friend of mine that had been using kicker products for a while mentioned those specific speakers, i dont know if they were designed as a sub or not, but they were said to have quite a bit of bass for 6x9's

As far as making the 4 12"'s fit. Im pretty sure I can do it. Itll be tight but the trunk of the 94 mustang is a definitely a lot bigger than the older Fox body mustangs. IF this wasnt an Infinite Baffle setup I wouldnt even think of tryign this but the guys at Image Dynamics said it would sound killer so Im excited to build the set up.  Im going to buy a 1" thick board that's made of a very strong wood (recomendations??).  From what DYohn said it sounds like the most important aspect is to keep the airspace in front of the subs from ever comming in contact with the airspace behind the subs. Thanks again for all the help. Ill be sure to document the entire install and take lots of pics.

recomend 1" MDF found at most lumber yards , Lowes , Home Depot. Take your time and measure and cut the board as close as possible to all the edges and wheel wells and from bottom of the trunk to the underside of the rear deck. Good luck and look foward to seeing the pics.
