i just bought a new radio for my truck (when i bought the truck [used] there was no radio in it) and my damn owner's manual doesn't have any type of wiring diagram for the thing. how can i find out which wire goes to what?!

Owner's manuals never have that kind of information. Try the Vehicle Information database on this site. If that fails, you can find the wiring info in the factory wiring diagram book. Your local library might have it for an 86. Also, look up and purchase the correct Metra harness kit for this vehicle (probably a 70-1763.)
