After installing a cheap amp and a pair of 10's, the left side speakers in my truck don't work at all. I did screw up and shoot some sparks out of the amp's power wire (grounded with screwdriver), and it blew the power wire fuse, but I replaced the fuse and that whole setup works. Is the reciever the problem here?

Forgot to add, this is a '99 F-250 Superduty Crew Cab, stock head unit, and speakers.

I think the amps done. try another amp, and be careful this time. See if everthing works. good luck.

Yep, it is possible. You could have blown the power amp in the head unit. Another lesson in the "always disconnect the battery before working on any vehicle power circuits" category. I suggest you try disconnecting your amp and see if the HU will come back on before you go any further. You might get lucky. ------------- Support the12volt.com

The amp is working fine, as are the subs. The only parts that don't work are my left side speakers.
The amp is connected to the reciever via the high pass inputs spliced into my rear speaker wires. Could the short have gone through my speakers and fried the left side of my receiver?

Could be... or the HU could be OK and it's just a shorted line-level adapter. Disconnect this from teh speakers and see. Like I said, you could get lucky. ------------- Support the12volt.com

Just tried disco'ing the amp, and the speakers are still dead.

Did you try hooking another set of speakers to your left side?
Usually, if you cross a + and - from a receiver, it will fry its internal amp, and none of the speakers will work.
Were there any unusual sounds or smells?

You don't have a RCA pair out of the HU?
What happens if you connect the lines to the rear speakers up to the amp directly (and don't connect the rear speakers at all)?

Disconnect the LOC you have connected to the speaker outputs from the head unit. ------------- Support the12volt.com

That's what I did. Still nothing.
I ordered a new head unit (wanted one anyway), but if I hook it up and it doesnt work, then it will be major troubleshooting time. Thanks for the help.

I know this sounds overly simple, but it is often overlooked (I have customers come in with the same problem) but have you checked the balance on the radio?

Don't have any other speakers to work with.
99.9% sure I didn't cross + and -.
No unusual sounds or smells, just sparks when I grounded out the power wire.

No RCA outs from the stock HU. That is why the speakers are being used.

hmm.. apparently my quote button doesnt work through Firefox. oh well...
Radio balance is set correctly. It was one of the first things I checked. I lose all sounds when it is set all the way to left.

Sorry to hear it. Like I said originally, an expensive lesson. Always disconnect the battery before working on anything related to a vehicle's power system. ------------- Support the12volt.com

This is true, but it does give me a great excuse to upgrade the head, which I wanted to do anyway. Also saves me from buying a crossover since the Kenwood I am looking at has them built in. My speaker taps will also be eliminated since the new HU has preamp outs.
thanks for the help, im sure I'll be back.

Well...that didn't take long...im back...keeping the same thread but I have a couple of new problems to address.
1) I have a whine at low RPM from the subs...is this a ground or wiring problem??
2) When I turn my key to the pre-start position, I can hear power go to the subs, they pop on. When starting, it seems to take a little extra time and effort to turn over. I thought the ATT/Rem wire was supposed to keep the amp off (eliminating power to the subs) when the radio was off.
