How to Install an Aftermarket Radio into a (1987) CAMRY XLE:
NOTE:  Buy a four-channel (four speakers) type radio (or radio+CD) unit.  Get a 40 watt unit

minimum.

1. The radio is anti-theft type.  Therefore, the radio sends a low-current siganl on all four

channels to a separate power amplifier, located behind the Glove Box on the passenger side.
2. The amplifier has two connectors on the bottom.  The rear wiring connector is the one with the

larger gauge of wires.  You have to bypass the amplifier.  The signal levels from the new radio

will be way t0o high for the existing amplifier to handle..it will fail.
Besides, you don't need it anyway with a new, self-amplified radio..

3.  Pull out the rear connector by depressing the "click" type connector latch on the side of the

connector.
4.  You will notice that it has the standard Toyota colour code for the four speaker channels

(eight wires total).  The colour codes are per "the12volt.com" Website.
Its Web address (URL) is:

https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/detail.asp?info=alarm&year=1997&make=Toyota&model=Camry&ID=18

957&type=Stereo

This Website has almost every car radio, alarms, etc. wiring diagrams..a great site.
Free membership, and do support their advertisers by clicking on the ads.
You are better off by going to the Website, but if you don't have any immediate computer access,

then for the 1997 Camry, the colour code is:

Constant 12V+ Blue / YELLOW
Switched 12V+ Gray
Ground Brown
Illumination Dark Green
Dimmer WHITE/ Green
Antenna Trigger n/a
Antenna Rear Window
Front Speakers 6 1/2" Doors
Left Front (+) Pink
Left Front (-) Purple
Right Front (+) Green
Right Front (-) Blue
Rear Speakers 6" x 9" Rear Deck
Left Rear (+) Black
Left Rear (-) Yellow
Right Rear (+) Red
Right Rear (-) White

Another. more basic Website is: https://www.installdr.com/InstallDocs/Toyota/Camry.html
and also on that site:  https://www.installdr.com/TechDocs.html

5.  The Constant Voltage wire is blue with a Yellow stripe, as the colour code shows.
Cut it and lead it back to the new after-market radio, which is usually the Yellow wire on the

new radio's wiring harness/connector.
6.  The Gray wire is cut and lead back to the new radio's :SWITCHED" wire, usually Red.
7. The last eight wires are cut and connected to the new radios' various speaker wires.
Usually, the new radio's colour code is :
Speaker Wires:
Left Front speaker wire: (typical replacement radio wire colors: (+) Positive: White, (-)

Negative: White with black stripe)
Right Front speaker wire: (typical replacement radio wire colors: (+) Positive: Gray, (-)

Negative: Gray with black stripe)
Left Rear speaker wire: (typical replacement radio wire colors: (+) Positive: Green, (-)

Negative: Green with black stripe)
Right Rear speaker wire: (typical replacement radio wire colors: (+) Positive: Purple, (-)

Negative: Purple with black stripe).

8.  Plug the connector back into the existing power amplifier.  Your new radio will now work.
I used crimp connectors: a lot less hassle than soldering.

or just use the Metra Toyota preamp harness, keeping the factory amp in circuit, plug it in and away you go
