I was looking at the Head Units on crutchfield for a 1999 Grand Am and all of them say that they require an extension kit so the HU sticks out 1" from the dash.  Has anyone had any experience with this and if so does it look tacky or does it look fine.

this could be the same issue a friend of mine has with her pioneer deck. it sticks out from the din they put it in. i would assume its your best option aside from custom fiberglassing something, and im sure it looks better than the deck actually sticking out a ways from the place it should fit in. but i was also told she could remedy her problem by removing some type of tab, inside the dash that blocks the decks from moving any further back. i dont know if this is your problem but im sure you could look into it. the tab is supposidly too strong too snap out by your hands, could be different in your vehicle though.

Its been a while since I did a grand am but I think /r7 has it right on. There is some minor cutting required but you can get the deck to sit in flush if you simply cut the tab out in the back. The tab is just used to hold the small plastic pole on the back of the factory deck which your after market deck wont have
