Subject: 6.5 component set under $400 - which one?
Date Posted: December 03, 2004 at 12:49 PM

i'm looking to replace my front 6.5" clarion components with something that can handle a little more power. i can push the new set with 2 x 70w rms @ 4 ohms. i understand that listening to speakers with my own ears is a good idea, but i still would like to know what is everyone's #1 choice of comps are. under $400 if possible. brand & model please.

thanks

Many components can handle that kind of power if used with a high pass crossover.  Do you currently have one on your Clarions?  What do you feel is lacking from your Clarions?

Tough question.  Many folks obviously are going to say the components they own are the number one choice.  (That's why they bought them!)  Also, nearing the $400 mark you're not going to find many BAD speakers. Not to sound cheesy, but a lot of it at that point is just personal preference.

I've been personally impressed with Mb Quart, obviously, Diamond Hex, Memphis's higher end line, Kappa Perfects, Focal's and Boston Acoustics.  Whether they are $400 or under depends on whether you buy online or not.

I'd also like to hear the Koda 6 components from Adire and the REaudio.com offerings.

I have my amp set on high pass. The clarions do sound decent, but i'm looking for some comps that can play loud & crisp clear. I'm intersted in focal& koda 6.1 but don't know of any shops nearby that carry these brands, so listening is not an easy option. But i'm still curious to know what some people prefer. Even more curious to know what installers would choose. What set would you get if you had the option to spend up to $400 for some comps? I value everyons opinion.

I've heard a lot of great stuff about the Kodas

If I had the cash I would buy them.

First, what amp are you currently using to power your Clarions?

Second, I'm not an installer, but I picked the Mb Quart PCE 216 set for myself because they were the most crisp and clear speakers through the midrange and highs that I demoed.  They also handle quite a bit of power, but don't need a lot to get loud.  The midbass is slightly lacking compared to some of the offerings from other brands, but I value vocal midrange over midbass for my mains.  I also need accurate highs because I listen to quite a bit of violin music.  Some folks don't like how crisp the quart tweeters are, saying they are two bright.  You'll have to hear them and see what you think.  Another huge plus for me was the ability to install the tweeter in the coaxial position.  I didn't want to find somewhere else to mount it in my car at the time.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Quart PCE set.  You can find them for around $300 shipped online or though a dealer willing to push some inventory off near cost.

Having said that, I don't think you can go wrong with many sets in this price range.  They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Currently pushing the clarions with soundstream van gogh 4x50 rms. i have a rockford class a amp that can push 70w @ 4 ohms seating in my room. i have the gains on the van gogh down to like a 1/4. the clarions are rated @ 50w rms. the clarions sounded real nice when i had the factory system & replaced my front speakers with them, but after i added subs & amps, they can't keep up. i'll keep those quarts in mind. thanks

2 Sets of Nakamichi SP-S600 will do the trick! Look on ebay, there is a guy that sells em for $210 a piece, but send him an email, he'll book you 2 sets for 400 flat with shipping and all. Nakamichi is a great product. Highly recommended.

First I would stick with the soundstream amp, the 20 watts of diffrent will make a world of diffrence in distortion ratio's between the soundstream and the rockford.    Frankly I run alpine type r component sets.   I love them..I have tried some brands that are even more expensive and supposedly higher quality, and I feel they are lacking in mid bass, for the money they are great..for $400 you could find 2 sets online and run 6.5 comp sets in front and rear

For SQ, that multisync can't even stand up to the SP-S6500.

eDi's for $250 shipped, and save some money.  My buddy has a set and is running it off a Nine.2, and it sounds awesome.

THE NAKAMICHI SP S6500 FOR $210.00 ON EBAY DON'T SOUND LIKE A BAD CHOICE. HOW DO THEY PERFORM IN THE MID-BASS SECTION?

Mid Bass if fine for SQ applications. They are all around great components.

UTHINKUKNOAUDIO - Did you reccomend 2 sets for the front or 2 sets all the way around in your 1st post?
