Right now I have a single JL Audio W1 12 and am considering buying a Koda 8 to replace it. I like the sound of the JL but the car i have now (a 2004 honda pilot) dosnt have enough cargo space for the JL sub and its large box. My question is this; would the koda 8 be as loud and sound as good as the JL sub I have right now? I have a Poweracoustik amp running the JL sub. It supposedly puts out 170 watts continuos but it only has a 15 amp fuse on it... What would be a good estimate of the power it actually puts out continuosly? I was thinking around 80 to 100 watts, would this be too much for the Koda 8? Thanks

Dosn't anyone have experience with the koda 8?

Do you plan to seal it or port it?

My advice is to open up WinISDpro and play with the estimated difference between the JL in its current enclosure and the Koda in a variety of enclosures.
The program has a feature that allows you to estimate SPL for a given amount of power. It should give you some idea what you'd be losing. Just know in the actual environment of the car things will be a tad different depending on your cabin gain and other environmental variables.

I would probobly be using it in a sealed enclosure.

80-100 should be fine. You'd have to port the Koda to have a chance obtaining the same output below 50hz-ish as the JL in a sealed enclosure.
Have you modeled it out yet?

In a 1.25 cf sealed box (the size of my current box for the JL sub) the JL 12 W1 would be about 108 db at 50 loud (without cabin gain or any other factors added in). The koda, in a ported .85 cf box tuned to 38 hz the maximum SPL (without cabin gain or any other factors added in again) was 106 db at 50 hz. The JLs maximum SPL ,in the same box, at 40 hz would be 104 db. The Koda's maximum SPL ,at 40 hz, in the same box would be 104 db also. Then, the JL's maximum SPL at 35 would be 102 DB, and the Koda's maximum SPL at 35 hertz is 101 DB. Would 38 hz be to low or high to tune the box for the Koda 8, or is it just fine?

38 is just fine as a tuning frequency. So, it looks like you won't really be giving up too many dbs across the sub bass frequency range. If the difference in box size works better for you, go for it! One last thing you might want to look at before you decide to go ahead with it: enter your estimated rms amplifier power on the signal tab in WinISD then look at the SPL graph instead of the Max SPL graph. Since the JL is a bit more efficient you'll see a couple more db's be added to its curve. Just something to consider. However, even a 3db difference from 40-80 is fairly small, I doubt it will change your decision. Remember to put a subsonic filter on the Koda if you do decide to port it, or you'll get some unwanted distortion below the tuning frequency. ------------- New Project: 2003 Pathfinder
