I removed the Factory stereo on a 1999 Cadillac Catera and replaced it with a Kenwood stereo and the check engine light came on.. Have anyone experienced this problem yet? I looked at the Wire harness and it seem to have more wires then its suppose to .. I am not sure if the factory stereo is intergrated with the computer system of the vehicle anyway.. If anyone have any advice on this please reply or give me an email tuandang@aol.com ps: the customer had thrown the factory stereo away so no i cannot plug it back in to troubleshoot. if its the factory stereo or not.. Thanks

You need to relocate the radio in that vehicle to keep the car's computer happy, but since it is in the trash, you are out of luck on that one. Better find another stock radio for it. Jazzy -------------

Is he having driveability issues? He might of disconnected the battery while connecting the radio. if He did, he might need to reprogram the electronic throttle control. i can post how if you need me to. I don't think the radio is intergrated with the pcm. never seen a stock radio that is.

This is a class 2 data vehicle, (sometimes mistakingly called RDS). Yes you will have to relocate the factory radio manually as no one makes a data retention harness for this vehicle yet.

Wow! Which company makes a harness with those ends on them? I have never seen one. Are you aware that harness has different ends than the standard GM's which most manufactuers have relocation harness' for?

im pretty sure circuit city sells them for around $60. not the relocation harness, but a "box" that mimics the factory radio circuitry

That would be a Metra GMRC-01 and that will not work on the Caddies because they have a different plug and use different "retention" software. The relocation they sell will also not work as it has different plugs also.

Metra GM class II data interface (GMRC01) | ....i found it, if the problem actually is because you dont have a factory radio, and it easily could be, then this interface may solve it. |

sorry, did not read the previous post...although i have installed decks in several newer GM's, i guess i havent come across that yet. good to know. btw, what does the plug look like? have any links that may give me an idea?

I do not have a picture sorry, but the Caddies use a 32 pin harness and the standard "class 2" GM's use a 24 pin harness.

What info does the stock radio hold? Communicates with bcm??? new to me.

The BCM and the radio talk to each other to make the radio work. The BCM does this with most of the electrical devices in the car. If one of the pieces of the data bus are taken out of the loop the computer throws a trouble code usually. Similar to how a home computer works.

the 99+ VW's with the double din radio are also linked to all of the other electronics in the car. i feel kinda bad for the people that ive done installs for because if they go to get a diagnostic test for any reason they are out of luck unless they brought the stock radio with them. does anyone know if some kind of relocation harness or interface is made for that data system?

On the VW.. its because the remote wires are hooked up ... if the harness has only 1 blue wire from the vw harness only hook up the blue and not the blue/white. when they are both blue and blue/white put together goin into the blue.. it will send a + at all times when radio is on.. so for some reason it interfers the computer.

In 1998 VW substituted the antenna turn on cavity for data for communications between the radio and BCM. Putting 12V down this wire locks up the BCM for diagnostic testing. 1998 and newer VW's and select other european vehicles now have the antenna booster turn on duplexed in the antenna coax.
