OK, someone explain to me what makes and amp digital. Cause I can tell you right now that having a digital read out and buttons to change your gain control and crossover dont make the amp digital, it makes the controls digital. D-class does not mean digital in case any one was gonna say that. As best as I can figure a A/B class amp which is never refered to as a digital amp has a very similar design to a D-class amp. So am I wrong here or can someone prove to me that there is a real reason amps are being called digital other than making them seem cutting edge by using one of the most over used buzz words out there right now.

Digital is over used everywhere, mostly just because they have a display with buttons. A tru digital amp is like the alpine mrd series. The audio signal is converted to digital data, then sent to a dsp processor which tunes the signal to whichever bass engine set up you have, then converts again back into analog? to the sub.

Now see, that makes sense. I hate hearing that someone says they have a digital 1600 watt legacy amp or some other assorted piece of crap they got at the swap meet.

Class D and T amplifiers are indeed "digital" in that the output transisters are switched on and off at high rates of speed to simulate the analog sine wave. Class A, B, AB, C etc. are analog amplifiers and use continuouslly variable outputs. Class A is by far the most accurate and musical. Thank you DYohn. That helps alot. I was just sick of people using the term and not knowing what it ment. I myself had no clear meaning and hence could not just start shooting them down with out knowing what I was talking about.

I love that site! I think that is one of the best explanations I have ever seen for Class-D amplification... and I already knew how they worked! Good link, Thanks DYohn!
