Whats up guys?

Im working on a 96 full size suburban. It currently has 4x10 speakers in the back and 5.25 in the front doors. My customer thinks it has speakers in the back boors also. It has dummy grills I think.  He wants to go all out, I am putting some infinati componets in the front and he wants some nice infinati 6x9's in the rear roof where the 4x10's are now. I dont think the hole is deep enough though. So I need to know if anyone has put 6x9's in a 4x10 place in the roof of these vehicles? Like 3 summers ago I did that in a k-10 blazer but the speakers where on the sides not the top. Also I need to know if there is actually a set of speakers in the second set of doors or just dummy grills. I will have the vehicle next week and have not been in it to see if there is any sound so im just going on what he says. But if anyone has any advise I would be gratefull. Thanks Branden Jones

I had a 98 suburban. The front doors have 6.5" speakers not 5.25 and it takes time to get to them. PM me if you want the crutchfield mastersheet which tells you how to install speakers the right way in the front doors. The back and rear speakers are easy. All you have to do is remove the grills (be careful though). You will not be able to install 6x9s in the rear 4x10 location. I would convince him to put some good 6.5s in the front and rears and not even worry about the 4x10s. And yes there is usually a set of speakers in the rear door but you can always check by just turning the radio on...

The only problem that we usually run across in suburbans and tahoes on the rear doors is mounting depth, you don't have much depth to play with on those.

if he insists on filling every speaker hole consider putting 4x6 plates where the 4x10's are....4x10's sound like poop. and theres not a hole lot of selection for them....i'd consider bostons or  infinity kappa's..i own the bostons and they sound good for 4x6's.:)

I have a 97 suburban and I fit 6x9 in the rear roof no problem.  All you have to do is: (1) remove the speaker covers (2) remove the existing speakers (3) remove the plastic trim around the tailgate (4) pull down the headliner a bit, and remove the mounting brackets [there are 2 screws holding each one in place] (5) cut out for 6x9 speakers on the mounting brackets [ on a bench, with a jigsaw] (6) re-install everything.
