My daughter is coing down for Christmas & I want to get some new speakers for her 97 Civic coupe. She already has a Pioneer H/U.  I haven't been around the particular car so not familiar with it, although I am quite competent to do the job.

What size speakers are in there stock & what can I fit? I'd like to get her 6.5"s in doors (which I wouldn't expect to be a problem) & 6x9's on the shelf, if those fit? I'd like to buy them before Christmas (& before I take it apart!) so want to be sure I have the right sizes. In the search I may have come across some conflicting info on whether on the DX there are no speakers (unlikely, since she says those back there are awful - sounds like something there, but shot!), 5x7's or 6x9's. Confirmation of actual OEM would be helpful.

I have read via search that the rear speakers are a major work effort to remove, with seats & panel removal being necessary. Again, not a huge challenge technically, but without a manual & familiarity with the car, would appreciate some pointers on where the various bolts, clips etc are .

I appreciate any guidance!

https://www.crutchfield.com/S-mDbZZQi9GWw/cgi-bin/prodgroup.asp?g=400&s=0&a=1&l=E&cc=01  Front doors 6.5, rear deck 6x9...according to the Crutchfield help.  That should make it easy for you.  Most rear deck speakers are replaced after taking the back seat (back) out and pulling out the parcel shelf.  Generally, the seat bottom is disengaged by pushing toward the rear to release the seat off of two hooks, then the back is bolted at the bottom.  And there would be holes for speakers in a car whether the particular package came with speakers or not, as long as there are speakers in any of the model packages.  You would just run new wiring from the deck.

Ok here is my field of expertiese.     6.5's will fit, BUT you cant have anything very deep at all or else when you roll the window down the window will hit the back magnet of the speaker.   We have modified our doors to build fiberglass pods to fit a set of alpine type r's    We had ma audio 6.5 mid bass drivers before and were nearly impossible.

The other problem I ran into up front is some speakers have a larger ring wround the outer area of them ayou either have to bend some of the metal back in the door or make a 1/4 inch rign to go around it to lift it slightly to fit into the door.

The rear shelf is a pain in the ass to take out.   the first step is to remove the rear seats, then you have to remove the side panels, then the rear window deck will lift up. You will have to reach back in to disconnect the center lights if it was availible on the DX

One last suggestion, If your daughter might be getting subs or a sub later one, You might want to consider soundproofing and sealing the dack deck,   there as alot of room for the rear window deck to move with the air coming from beneath it.   We had some troubles with the deck hitting our rear window and it destroyed our tint! We have since covered the whole metal on the rear deck with brown bread and mounted a set of 5 1/4 co-ax sets that mount to the outside of the rear window deck, I think it looks alot better, and sounds alot better then the 6x9's anyway.   Let me know if You have any questions or would like to see any pictures.
