Subject: alpine type x 12s vs w7s vs 9500s

This may be a loaded question or a dumb question but..I currently have two alpine type x 12s paired to two alpine mrd 1001ds. I think I melted the vc on one of my 12s because I was playing my music loud and smelled a burning smell coming from my sub..now it doesn't hit as hard, or play as loud at lower volumes...I have to turn my Hu's volume alot higher than i used to just to get some bang from them. I'm wondering how I could have damaged the subs with that amp.

My next question is more of a comparison between the type x 12s, jl w7s, and 9500s,, I know the 9500 is an spl sub when the w7s, and type x's are sq subs but what i'm basicaly looking for out of those 3 models is a sub that can play pretty much as loud as I want and still have decent sq.. do you guys think I should go with the w7 12s or possibly even the w7 13s?

either on of those will sound nice, they both will sound better than the type x. the problem with the type x is that it needs a lot of power to move this sub. take either of the w7's or the mtx 9500 in a ported enclosure and they will produce nice lows and will have nice spl as well.

you can plug the 9500 in a wall outlet at your house and not blow it. [/URL]9500 vs w7

Yah..i've read that comparision page about w7s vs 9500...so a pair of 9500s will sound nice with the amp I currently have? I may go with those

Hey man I have heard all 3 of those subs  and they are all nice but right now i got the 9500's in my car and i love them they play across the whole spectrum of freq. so i would say go with them and besides ther alot less hard to put in a box than the W7's are LOL well i hope that helps

just wondering.. would i be better off going with 1 12" MTX T9500, or dual 12" MTX T8000's?

Not again... the MTX is an SPL sub and the JL is an SQ sub that can still pound. Outlet comparisons show nothing. There was a pretty big discussion between the Brahma, 9500, and W7 a while back. https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=28956&KW=9500+JL&PN=0&tpn=2 MTX's comparison wasn't that great either...

The Brahma costs less then the MTX, can play as loud or louder, and has great SQ. It would be my choice if I didnt want pay alot for the JL sub and wanted a sub that would play loud but still sound good.

I would throw the brahma into the mix. That would get my vote, with the 9500 being a close second. Ive heard quite a few complaints about the type x, and im not really a JL fan. But thats just my opinion on the matter, you should try and listen to the subs before you buy them and decide for yourself which sounds better.

Out of my tastes, i would get the W7 12'' or the Brahma, if you throw that into the mix. W7 and the Brahma are toss up woofers, so you choose which one you like out of the two, one is a lot less than the other but they do the same in output about. I like both of them.

Just get the Eclipse 9100 series so you can have both worlds SQ/SPL..

I'm thinking I may stick with the alpine type x subs/comps for now.. If I blow them I'll go with a pair of w7s..i'm wanting more of an a sq sub instead of an spl sub. I'm more into sq than spl. I owned a set of mtx 8k 15s a while back and they were loud but I can't remember the quality of the sound. One reason my system prolly isn't hitting as hard as it should because i'm still running a stock alt with two mrd 1001s and one mrv 540v

If you looking for pure SQ then Eclipse would be the sub of my choice...The W7's tend to sound boomy and muddy not nearly as clean as Eclipse subs.. I have heard both in many different type enclosures and the Eclipse just sound better.

What size of box do you have those X-12's in?     So far the best box i have designed so far was exactly 1 cube before the sub was installed, , i think it comes to .75 cube  once the sub is installed.

There definately designed for very small box's.

JL is overrated and overpriced. The weakest system Ive heard was 2 JL V2 W6 10" subs with a 500 watt JL amp.

I actually had the company I ordered my subs/amps from on ebay make the box for me.. it's a pretty huge box

get a sheet of 1" mdf its like $25 , and build a 13"x 13" x 13" , just for testing to see if your like it, ,i can almost guarantee your problem is that your box is to big.

What are the outside dimensions of the box?  Try useing the box size calculator on this site to find out what size your box is now.

paradigm, hate to tell you, but JL is overrated and overpriced. Only exception is the W3. It is a good sub and worth the money. Other than that, no sub is worth that kind of cash. You can get their best sub (W7) and put it up with a sub half its price (Adire Brahma) and they would be nearly the exact same in results. JL = MONEY. Better stuff out their for the money you spend...

Why do you think JL=money? Really think about that statement, coupled with what I said, and you just might figure it out. They are expensive for a reason, and they are great subs to boot. Not overrated at all and well worth the money. Can you get something just as good for half the price? If all you're talking about is sound, either sq or spl, then the answer is yes. Otherwise it's at best a "maybe." Seriously think about it and let me know when you think you have the answer posted_image

I have and answer and i already stated it. JL = money. A sub equally as good as that W7 is the Adire Brahma, and it is half the price. Check it out at adireaudio.com and anyone hear will tell you that it is. This is not a maybe, this is a yes. They are way overrated. Everybody thinks that JL makes the best subs... guess what... there are better out there! for the money, i can get a lot better speaker than what i can get JL. I can get louder, clearer, whatever. Jesus for $600 for a W7 i could buy 5 15's for god sakes. Think about it, and let me know when you start to know audio.

uthinkuknoaudio, go back and reread my post carefully, and answer the question as it was asked. Then let me know when you know English posted_image

I thought the Brahma was better than the W7? Now its just "equally as good"? At least keep the story straight people, please! You're confusing me...posted_imageposted_image

This is not a contest. I merely posed a question that you obviously could not answer. And once again, you respond with negativity to another member. How sad. We can disagree with one another, as we obviously have, but there really is no need to be a jerk about it. You should really find another place to talk shop if you can't keep it civil.

Paradigm, i can see you were dropped on your head. I did answer you question. The sub you can get for the half the price is the Adire Brahma. It is equally as good or better, as stated before. My reading comp skills are fine, but i don't think you could pass a common sense test for preschoolers. I don't try to put down users, but  other users just have to use their heads and comprehend what i am saying here. You should find another "site" if you can't act civil and respect audio opinions. And when we tell you that you are wrong, believe me, you are wrong. Don't belittle us and call us stupid, because you'll turn out looking like the jackass. On the other note, Eclipse makes a fantastic woofer, and i think some of their lines rank right up their with the "Elite Woofers". W7, Brahma, Crazy Titanium thing that Eclipse has (Don't really know what it is called but i heard it and it is crazy loud and bangs), Alumapro M16, and man all of those crank. I envy anyone that can afford those M16's...I'll trade you some fosgate for them lol...

uthink, take a break.  Relax for a while.  Paradigm has been a respected member for quite some time here, so you should be respectful to that.  When you say "we" and "us", you are just referring to yourself, so don't lump other members of the forum into your tirade.  Your opinions are not the final ones on this forum.  When Paradigm said that JL Audio was not overrated or overpriced, he gave his opinion based on his experience.  Leave it as such, because this is a forum where individual opinions are welcome.

Well I don't know which are better because I have no experience with any of them.  I have the subzone box for a 12w7 so that's what I'm going to buy.  Can anyone tell me what amp they recommend for that sub?  It's supposed to take 750 RMS I believe but I think it has 1 3-ohm coil.  Please help.

Thank you stevdart. As you can see, uthink doesn't play nice with others when they don't think like he does.

The question was, "Why do you think JL=money?" uthinks answer was (paraphrasing here), "because." "Because you don't know, do you? It's okay to admit you don't know something; it may even help improve your demeanor posted_image (you still need help on your reading and comprehension skills, as I pointed out earlier).

uthink, flame away if you like, but you've already been pwned, so there's no point in continuing this circular argument. Thanks for your opinion.

You have made an excellent choice. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking you got screwed price-wise posted_image

As far as an amp, you could go with the JL Audio 1000/1 - it does 1000 watts into 1.5-4 ohms. However, you will pay quite a bit for this amp if you decide to go with this one. Alot of people have been suggesting the JBL 600.1 and 1200.1 for a sub of this type; maybe these would be more to your liking/within your budget. Someone else want to help us out here?

this has been a very interesting topic..everyone seems to have very valid points..and I respect everyone's views...as someone stated earlier..we are all going to have different opinions ...that's what so good about forums.. I may try the w7's or elipsee's sub... I want "a sq sub that can get loud" The type x's get loud..but only @ certain freqs..I want a pretty well rounded sq sub. the sound waves from the type x's on a 20-30 hz bass line hurts my face!!

Wow! the has been an interesting topic.  I have another question to introduce.  I currently have a Premier TS-W5000SPL.  The big daddy.  This sub has done what I've asked of it and more. (shredding records and taking beatings while maintaining very admirable composure)  Though I think I am ready to sell and look for an even more SQL friendly sub.  I want to stay with  a single 12.  My research thus far has led me to the following conclusions.

-JL 13W7 = The BMW of subs, expensive, but you get top of the line luxury and performance.

-MTX 9500 = Made for SPL, advertise SQ, but I highly disbelieve the SQ claims.

-Eclipse = Evidently well rounded, but I'm not sure I've had enought experience with them to gain my trust.

     and last but not least...

-Adire Audio Brahma = Many records I've set with Adire (before they became known with car audio)  I put them right   up beside JL, but I want reassurance that their Brahma's SQ equals or surpasses JL's W7.

For the time being, I am looking to size up the 13W7 vs Brahma 12.  I do belive the brahma will post higher numbers, but that means nothing if it doesn't sound good doing it.  Any advice that might sway my favor to one or the other?  Thanks in Advance.

I think Steven can help you out on the Adire side of things, AFAccord. The Brahma and the W7 are comparable, one costs less than the other; otherwise there is little to no difference (so I've heard) in sound. Since I've not heard a Brahma before, I can only speak for the JL Audio side of it and tell you that if your budget allows, you may like the W7. Best thing you can do is go to a dealer and listen to one, and ask them questions on setup and such, so if you do decide to purchase one, you will already be ahead of the game on the installation-knowledge part of it. Hope this has helped.

Lets not forget about RE XXX and IDMAX.

On the topic JL=money, When compared to RE XXX, Adires brahma, and image dynamics IDMAX; The sound you get from the other three is better if anything equal that the w7, for the money.

Dont get me wrong, JL makes some fine quality products.  And so does RE, Image Dynamics, Adire Audio, TRU technologys...etc.  It all depends on the listeners ear.

Is it the general concensus that one 12" Brahma would have higher output than one 13W7?  I realize that the SQ comparison is a toss-up for listener's preference, but wasn't the Brahma designed with more output in mind?  Thanks for all the info.
