i know you deal with more sphistcated systems than this but...

im gonna install my simple sony deck tomorrow. i cant get a wiring harness anywhere for an 87 cherokee xj. i just cant find it. anywhere. so im gonna hardwire it in. i guess this isnt so bad really. ive done it before. once. when i was about 15 years younger. im kinda worried about the grounding placement in the dash area of the cherokee. anybody got a suggestion? or suggestions on connection types? like crimps or some other type for the wires themselves? and i need an antennae lead extension. ill just go to radioshack, f**k it... but any suggestions would be great.

Try a Metra 70-1817

the problem there is: the built in connection coming out of the dash is two different clips, one female with four holes and one male with four little prongs. i bought the same thing you mentioned, which was mentioned to us by the best buy guy.

it wont work because one of the plugs coming from the dash is female. this harness youre mentioning is a coupled two male configuration.

or is there another way to use it in my instance? if so PLEASE let me know. this whole thing is driving me crazy.

i had a guy tell me that i couldnt get the needed plugs anymore because jeep was AMC owned back then and they went to something else and the plugs changed after 87. the best buy guys gave me one for an 88-96. same thing by looks as the Metra 70-1817. i cant be sure really.

let me look at what i have ................time passing....................

i have a...OOOH!!! a metra (weird coincidence eh?) 70-1002. i knew the best buy guys were incompetent. it took me like ten seconds looking at the packaging on the bag to tell i couldnt use it, but i looked inside the dash and confirmed the incompatability.

see...i run a professional audio recording studio. i should be able to do this alone, but im totally at a loss as to how to get this done, lolol.

i need my stereo in the car to test different enviornments on multitrack mixes. im losing valuable time here. plus i have all this time off for the holidays. i want o get it done.

so.... crimps or something else?

but hey man, seriously thanks for the suggestion. maybe the Metra 70-1817 is the answer. ill go look around to see if i can get one somewhere local. maybe they have the right one at best buy. or maybe somehwere else local.

Maybe what you have is a 2 speaker set up......do you have 2 or 4 speakers?  Hard wire the deck

Find constant power, then switched power, then illumination(if its there is one) then ground. What remains are speaker wires. Use a 9 volt battery to "pop" the wires......touch the battery to 2 wires at a time until the speaker scratches...or pops. Provided you have identified the other wires FIRST...no damage can occour

i have four speakers. my mistake, each plug has eight prongs or holes. i have a little diagram to tell me what the power, switched (what is that anyway?) and illumination are. i know which one is ground, (i am assuming it is most always the black one. i will go by the diagram.

i have identified the speaker wires. they're color matched, one having a white stripe to indicate +/-.

my worries lie in connecting the wires. should it be the little hollow blue crimps or some other technique

id never solder them together, id never twist and tape. so the only method i can think of would be the crimp to connect the wiring together. would you agree?

the bettery idead had been told to me from a guy at a local installer. a very good idea i might add. probably in use for years. great stuff.

ill take the old metro harness back to best buy or try to ebay it or trad it on ebay for some pre-chewed gum. lol.

ive been looking at it hard. i think i have it figured out with the diagram from the website, here, and the diagrams in the book that came with the deck. i just need to seslct a connector and go for it.

im just gonna use a blue or red squeeze crimp and go for it. it shouldnt cause the jeep to explode or anything, so im good to go. at least we have a transit authority in town, so if i f**k anything up, im good to go until i can have it fixed. hahaha!

thanks everybody!
