I am replacing the factory system in my 2003 Ford Explorer. I am into sound quality, not being heard from three blocks away...and wanted some advice on what sub and amp to run in my system. I just switched out the head unit with a Pioneer DEH-7600MP, and have replaced the factory speakers in the doors with Infinity Kappa 5 X 7's, rated at 100W RMS (300 peak). Right now I am running them with the head unit powering them, but I want to get a 4 channel amp to power the Infinity's and then get a mono amp and a subwoofer.

I want tight accurate bass, but also want good performance when listening to R&B occassionally. I was thinking about a single 10" sub in a sealed enclosure. What do you guys recommend for the sub and the amp? I would say my budget is about 150 for the sub and about 400 or so for the amps if I can get anything decent for that. I could possibly move up if I had to and it was worth it.

I'm not too familiar with the best brands....I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

some of the best brands include JBL, MTX, Alpine, Pioneer, and Clarion i would say check out Adire audio for your 10"(about $125, real good quality, doesnt need to much power usually)

I was thinking about Adire actually, hadn't even heard of them until yesterday browsing this forum. I can move up in price if necessary....how about the amp? I think a simple four channel amp would do for the satellite speakers, so most of the money would go toward the sub amp.

Definatly stick with 1 10" sub and  get a SEALED box. Without a doubt, sealed boxes provide the most acurate bass response.

if your buget is in the 550 range..your gonna be good..

How about keeping your entire system infinity?

the infinity reference amps run on the $300 range, and an infinity kappa perfect 10" sub is about $120. throw in the sealed box and the 8gauge power wire( id reccomend 8 gauge for what im talking about)

your still well under 550.

Thanks for the comments....what kind of RMS are we talking about with those components (sub and amp) and is that amp a mono amp or is it multichannel? I am definitely going to go with a sealed enclosure, not just for sound quality but also because the box is smaller.

Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1d dual voice coil 10" subwoofer about 150.00

use the Infinity Reference 610A  mono amp it will give you about 600 rms at 2 ohm. 299.00

in s nice sealed enclosure. run this sub in parrallel to get 2 ohms adjust your gains right and this will sound great.

Infinity Reference 750A 111 X4 for 299

or the Infinity Reference 752A 142 X 2 for 150.00 and run this to your fronts and your rears with your deck. this amp is better for your budget but I would chill out some more for the 4 ch.

Thanks! Those sound like some good options...I think I will probably just get the four channel amp and the mono amp. I'll see what kind of prices I can get on those components online. Thanks for the suggestions.

actually I have a couple of questions.....that woofer is only rated for about 350 RMS. Wouldn't the 610A  overpower it at 600 watts RMS? Also, my satellite kappas are rated at 100 RMS.

infinity has a new 6-channel amp available as well, if you're looking to go all infinity and/or want to save space.  The 2 sub channels would just get bridged to power a single sub.

Like yourself, I am more about overall sound quality and balance than just having boom that people can hear from miles away.  That 110 watts per speaker for the infinity 4-channel is an incredible amount of power.  In my opinion it's a lot more than you'll need.  I use a Rockford Fosgate P4004 amp to power my speakers (Infinity kappa 52.5i in the front and 62.5i in the rear).  I can tell you I am incredibly pleased with how good it sounds, and I have turned it up loud enough to the point where my ears start to hurt, and it's still distortion free.

Just something to think about....

just an explanation for my previous post....I'm not trying to push my RF amp on you. I'm just recommending you consider the 5760a, because I think it will give you more than enough power for all the components in your system.

couple of questions about that amp..(I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to amps/subs, but I'm learning quick)..how would I set this amp up? I would run four channels into the 4 ohm satellites (56W RMS) and then bridge the two sub channels into a single channel at 2 ohms (wiring the sub in parallel)..what the wattage be on the bridged channel?

......one more random thought....how do Infinity amps stack up as far as quality of construction, signal clarity..etc? There a million brands out there and want to make sure I get a quality amp, at least within my budget constraints. If the Infinity is a good one, I think I will go with the 5760a. Seems like a lot of amp for the money..

you are correct about the satellites--it would 56W RMS per channel.  For the sub, the 2 channels get bridged into one, and it puts out 287W RMS.

the infinity amp is pretty good.  there will always be skeptics, no matter what brand it is, but I've been pretty impressed with tthese amps and this one in particular is definitely a lot of amp for the money, as you noted.  Usually if the amp has a power rating conforming to the new CEA-2006 standard, that's a pretty good indicator that it's a solid amp.

What kind of sub are you going to be getting?  specifically the model number?  If it's a single voice coil sub, then as long as it's a 4-ohm voice coil that'll work perfectly for the amp.  Most amps (including this one) can only support a 4-ohm load when bridging two channels.

With that in mind, I should mention that If the sub has two voice coils, then you'd want to get one that has 8-ohm voice coils or 2-ohm voice coils.  With the 8-ohm version you'd wire the two voice coils in paralell, and present a single 4-ohm load to the amp.  Or with the 2-ohm version you'd wire the voice coils in series, and still present a 4-ohm load to the amp.  Many DVC subs have 4-ohm voice coils, so make sure you steer clear of those.
