Subject: JL 12w3v2-D4 which amp?

I just purchased a JL audio 12w3v2-D4 and plan on wiring it for 2 ohms (which is going in a JL stealthbox for a dodge ram). Its either between a MRD-M301 or a MRD-M501 as I already have a MRV-T420 running my components and want similarly looking amps on the rack.

The sub is said to have an RMS handling wattage of 300

The M301 350wx1 RMS (2ohms @14.4v), 250wx1 RMS (2ohms @12v)
The M501 550wx1 RMS (2ohms @14.4v), 425wx1 RMS (2ohms @12v)

any and all suggestions/confirmations would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

if you can afford the 501 go for it, this sub will take that power with out a problem

are you saying that my 12 inch JL12W3v2 D2 can also take about 550WATS RMS mine is either 4 ohm or 1 ohm can mine also take 500WRMS + without damging or givign crazy distrotion?

The MRD-M301 should be plenty for that sub. You won't gain that much by going to the MRD-M501.

If your sub is actually 2 ohm DVC then you can't use a mono amp thats stable down to only 2 ohms (like the MRD-M301, MRD-M501, and MRD-M1001). You can either wire it for 1 or 4 like you said. If it is actually a 2 ohm DVC sub then look for a 300 to 350 watt continuous 2 channel amp.

so for me since mine is a dual 2 ohm voice coils the manual states that it can be wired for 1 or 4 ohm operation in my case i can either buy a 4ohm amp or a 1ohm amp right. But what i wanna know is can i really put 500WRS + into the sub i have even though its rated only for 300WRMS max by JL AUDIo? im giving the sub currently 320is WRMS at 4ohms and its pretty nice.

1 for the MRD-M501
1 for the MRD-M301

This just doesn't get any easier...does it, still coming down to my decision?posted_image

Foolish:  honeslty dont waste the money on the 501 you WILL BE VERY HAPPY with the MRD-M301 as i said myself i have the D2 version i ran it off a 220*1 RMS at 4ohms on a alpine mrv-t320 for a month and the bass was pretty damn nice and tight. THen i got a amp that does 340WRMS *1 at 4ohms. and wow the sub pounds i dont htink any more power than this is needed. Is the box you are goign to be using a PORTED Or sealed im using a Ported tuend to bout 32hz and its very nice. in the summer months im building anew ported box with al ower turing frequency.

Just take the MRD-M301 you WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED . just for example my friend has 2 of your subs in a 5.4ft^3 boxed giving each sub 150WRMs and DAMN it POUNDS for 150Watts. and mine is almost the same at double the power. so your  350*1WRMS is PLENTY and yours will be at 2ohms bit louder.

Hate too pee on this ..But i upgradded from a w0 to a 10w3v2 pushing about 150 watt's from a 6450 jl amp (at 5 channels)listening to thechno for about 20 minutes i melted the coil's. Had to go give them there sub back. Then i called resonant eng..now i have a sub that give's me dirty look's when i heat it up.   300 for that sub should be enough to melt it...good luck=0.

Foolish: the guy i bought my sub from my JL 12W3v2 D2 was using a god damn jl 500/1 on the sub and guess what ti works just fine now its not blown he didnt go crazy on bass boost or anythign tand the sensitivty wasnt turned all the way up he told me that jl said the settings to sub that he was putting abour 400-450WRMS to the sub . and SUBS can take MORE POWER in a sealed enclosure than a PORTED one so dont worry just give ur jl 350 -450WRMS ulll be fine man

I run a Zapco 6.0 Mono (600W) into that sub and beat the hell out of it daily in a Stealth Box for the F-150 Harley.

Well, mabey i was unlucky. I was also comparing my exp.with a 10in..installed and ajusted by a sound shop (earmark). It didn't bottom out or have alot of distortion all the sudden i heard it start rubbing and knew what it was. went back and they confirmed melted coils..These other guy's seem to be hitting that 12in sub with alot of power so i would take my advice with a grain of salt.

I have two JL 12w3's running off a 500 watt monoblock, (mind you I'm running it at 1 ohm which I probly shouldn't be doing), and they pound hard. 300 watts will be more than enough for one of them, are you sure that alpine's m series are one ohm stable. If they aren't you will probably void whatever warranty comes with it by running it at 1ohm but it will be enough power!! Good luck

Given that the amp is providing clean, unclipped signal to the sub, it doesn't matter what the impedance load on the amp is.  It's the wattage to the woofer that is important.  There are a lot of people who successfully power subs with amps that are capable of more power than the sub is.  It's all in how carefully you set it up.  Measure the output and don't exceed the RMS of the sub.

Any and all...get the m301 put the audiocontrol epicenter between your source and amp.(SHUT YOUR AMP CROSSOVER FLAT FOR SUB) PRECISLY TUNED THAT COULD SOUND LIKE TWO 12'S(to some) porly tuned that will melt your coil's or blow your surround. ROOT MEAN SQURE THERMAL RATING'S...SPEND THAT EXTRA BUCK ON PROCESING THE SIGNAL. You will find it's attributes in procesing with adaqute power is much more enhanced by control from user. there are proccesor's being made as we speak. (mabey look around) there kinda inexpensive too.(considering)
