I've decided to go ported and I know there's been some discussion about JL's recommended specs.  Should I stick with JL's specs or not?  If not:  how big, slot or round port, and what should it be tuned to?

the boxes I design for this sub for a street beat box, are 1.68 cu ft internal with a tuning freq of 36 hz. I would highly recommend using a slot/rectangular port

for 1 10?  that is more than double jl specs.  i know people say sealed for sq and ported for spl but how does this box sound?  i listen to rock/rap about 70/30.

well if you listen to more rock. The I might go with a smaller enclosure, But I am running each one of my eclipse 10's in a similar enclosure and they sound great. I listen to rock/rap about 50/50   so I know where you are coming from.   If you went with something around 1.25-1.4cu ft I think you will be fine, Use a freeware program like Win Isd to design the ports trying to keep your vent mach to a minimum.

Manufacturers post smaller box sizes because small sells. Most are smaller than ideal, especially for ported.

from my understanding and I know there is more to it, It is the speed of the air/ or force of the air traveling through the port.   I have found if you are trying to keep a ported box as clean as possible there are 3 key things that I use.
Low tuning frequency
low vent mach, but not so low there is not air moving
slot/retuangular ports help alot!

Thats just how I go about things and havent had a complaiant yet
