I need some options / suggestions for replacing the 4x6 speakers in the dash of my 2001 Chevy Blazer. Can you professionals out there tell me which speakers will fit? which are the best? could a smaller speaker or tweeter be used with an adapter plate? I am haveing the Pioneer DEH-8600MP installed and I want to lose my stock speakers

I replaced the stock 4x6's in my dash with Pioneer 4" round coaxials. It can be done. I made a new baffle from a thin piece of wood I had here at home. It was about 1/8" thick. Any thicker and the factory grill would not go back on. If you do something like this, you have to watch out for tweeter protrusion(how high above the speaker's rim the tweeter sticks up). That could also interfere with the grill going back on. Also, if you do this, I say use the old speaker as a pattern. Lay it face down on the wood you will use and draw an outline of it BUT before you cut it out, you have to cut out the hole that you will use to mount the new speaker in. Otherwise, it will be very hard to cut.

You can do this for either a 3.5" size, a 4" size, or a tweeter(I wouldn't do the tweeter one). If you opt for the tweeter choice though, I actually did see a few years back that Rockford Fosgate made a tweeter that was made to replace a 4x6 speaker. I don't think that would sound the best, but it would be easier to buy one already made than to try to make it.

Or you can just get some new 4x6's that are oval shaped(I heard this design would distort easier than a round one will though). Or you can even check out the 4x6 plate speakers that they make which consist of a 3.5" woofer and a separate tweeter mounted on a plate similar to what I described making. It's like a little set of component speakers, but not really. That may also help when it comes to mounting it since the 3.5's magnet would be out of center because if it wouldn't go down one way, you could just turn it around and maybe it would fit better. In my dash I already had trouble with a magnet hitting the heater duct. Had it been off center, it would have worked but it was just a regular 4x6 oval and the magnet was centered. The 4" round that I ended up using was shallower and it fit centered.

You really need to know how much mounting depth you have to work with. I don't know where to tell you to look for that other than just doing what I did, which was just yank one out and look for yourself. My truck is a 92, a lot older than yours so it won't likely be the same, but I had about 2 inches or so.
