Hey Alpineguy, or any one else; Would it be possible to use an iva-1005 along with my cda 7977? or is this overkill? Any ideas on what some one might to expect to pay for a 1005? used. thanks

Yes it is possible, but i wouldn't hook them both up normally. You have 2 choices for hook ups, you could take the rca outputs from the cva-1005 and link them directly to the ai-net input on the cda-7977. And just use the CVA for watching movies, , they will only be 2 channel tho. Or wire both units up so they work fine like you would normally install 1 unit, but instead install a 3 way switch on the ingition line so the 2 units absolutly cannot be on at the same time, , just 1 at a time.
Personally i would just choose the cva-1005, or just the cda-7977, not both. If you don't use the built in X-overs, and time correction in the CDA , go with the CVA.
I have seen the CVA-1005's going for $200-$500 on e-bay

Is the 1005 a better sounding unit? I do use the x-overs on my 7977. the 7977 doesn't have time correction, but I thought the 1005 had both. Someone is selling it locally w/ a dvd player and the 6 disc changer...for about 650 however the monitor doesn't open right.

I can guarantee you wont hear a difference in sound between the 2 other than he fact you will miss your x-overs. As for the monitor not opening right, call alpine monday and ask them if they can still service them, and if they know an approx price.

Have you ever thought of adding the TMEM790 instead of the 1005? It is a much nicer screen and is designed to be used with another head unit. I have seen Crutchfield blowing them out for $650.
