First, ensure that your sub is capable of down-firing. https://www.accelerator-pedal.com/sag.htm You don't often find down-firing inside a trunk because there is usually enough room to mount normally.

A properly constructed system would sound just like any other sub. But the questions above of "why" are important. The only purpose for down-firing is for appearance or to fit into a specific system design (usually in a house) or into a constrained space (like under a seat.) In a trunk, none of these apply... so why?

Appearance mainly, maybe do some plexiglass to show the magnet. But if is going to hurt SQ or the sub in anyways it not worth it to me.

I have a single 12" in a downfire box in my SUV...Mainly to protect the sub so that I can still haul stuff in the back without worrying about puncturing the sub...And I just ran my sub through the SAG calculator and it says its not suitable for downfiring....Kinda odd that the last 6 contests I went to I either placed 1st or in the top 4....So I wouldnt put much weight in that...

I hear no difference...All you need to ensure is that when the sub excurds (plays) that it will not hit the floor of the trunk...Also you need to at the least leave a gap of 3" between the bottom of the box to the floor (pretty much takes care of the Excursion prob)....
