My girlfriend has a 94 mazda mx3 with a pioneer deh-p6000 head unit. I pulled it out last week to find out that there was no ground connected but it still works why is that and does it need to be hooked up even though it still works

It's gounding through something else.  Possibly antenna.  Hook up that ground as it is feeding back through something else and could potentially cause a lot of damage.

yeah its probably the antenna. ground  it, it should help it run a little cooler and youll avoid any possible voltage drop.

most mazda's are ISO mounted decks .when you use a ISO bracket it grounds the deck you are mounting  to chasis ground.plus it can ground thru the antenna.like everyone else says still ground the wire..............
