i got a fairly cheap kit, but have a feeling that the icluded rca's aren't going to cut. do i have to go with custom or higher, or are there any decent ones bellow that mark?

Look through the insulation at the two wires.  Are they twisted around each other?  If so, the cable should be good enough to use.  If, in the end, you have noise problems with the system....it will be simple enough to trace it to the wires if they are the culprit.
