I had a person come by today with a big time mess of an install in his car. He had a small Bostwick amp, I think around 500 watts, and 2 Power Acoustic 15's in a sealed box (that was leaking bad at the side where it was put together) and a 1 farad cap (gotta have those caps!). His other speakers were factory hooked up to the HU. Needless to say it sounded like crap. Worse than that he had just had it all installed last week. He took it back and the guy actually told him if he would buy ANOTHER cap and hook it up his crappy sounding bass would sound great! Yeah, that's his problem, he needs another cap! I didn't talk bad about this mess, but I did tell him that he needs to start over and have this done the right way. Please tell me that none of you do people this way. People like that make it very tough on the honest installers out there. I tried to tell him that he didn't have to let me do the work, just take it to SOMEBODY that knows what they are doing. It's sad to see people taken advantage of this way. Just wondering why anybody can do this type of crap and sleep at night.

are you sure he had somebody do it?  i know when i did my own first 'quality' installs, if i took it to a good installer to fix, i would always blame the mess on someone else!  and any ideas i had about fixing the mess, i would say someone else suggested too.  oh those were the days.  just a thought.

The two main reasons things like this happen, IMO, are inexperience and greed.  Inexperience = bad install without proper attention to details, and greed = try to do everything too fast with sub-par gear and the famous "you need more caps."  It's sad, but it's also what keeps GOOD shops and installers in business.

There seems to always be someone out there doing this. We have a shop intown that when I first got up here 4 years ago I went to apply for a job there because they were known for the best company in town the authorized alpine and jl audio dealers. I got to see some installs and I was apauled. when they put in a cd deck it was loose and they put a large amount of hot glue undrer the deck to keep it tight. they fried somone amp i saw the sparks when they touched the power wire and the negitive together and the amp started smoking, told the costumer that his amp was already fried. needles to say that I left and was employed else where. We still have people come here after they get something installed from this shop, and we fix the install.

A lot of times customers will try to save a few bucks and do it themselves, then blame another shop. As a rule of thumb, I will charge double for installing any product that I sell to a customer whom I distinctly remembering saying, "I'll install it myself." Also, for customers who call me to try to get wiring colors/removal tips/etc )start off by saying, "sir/ma'am, I can't help you over the phone, but for a  fee of $XXX, if you come in to our shop, I will make your (insert equipment here) work." You must make people understand that the business you work for does not operate on dimes. You get what you pay for, so pay now, and avoid all the BS and extra charges if you try to skimp on install. Personally, I've done numerous Porsche/MB/Audi cars where people try to skimp on install. It's always the people who can afford it who try to get a "good deal."
