SPL Comp

I got a buddy who wants to do SPL comps. He wanted to know which subs to work with for just SPL. Well, i told him MMATS (Juggernauts) and Digital Designs. Sound good? Well, i was thinking adire as well (Brahma extreme), but not much can outdo Juggernauts... any others?

juggs are good in more ways than one  mostly base your/his choice on how much power is available.  for extreme applications id say dd 9900 series all day long, kinda pricey though the 9917 quad coils i use were $1299 each.  michael jones, usaci wr holder uses 4 9915s powered by 32 crossfire 2000d amplifiers, thats over 16kw each!  dd  9500s are good and the new 3500d series are pretty dang stout for the price.  then you have re, adire, crossfire bmf series, rf power series, kicker l7, or kicker solo x, audio que, and treo is pretty good so i hear.  a company to watch out for too is db drive, they build some pretty stout sh!t.  in mid 2005 they are going to producd an spl only sub that plays only from 50-80 hz that will basically just be an air piston. sq, whats that?  check out each of those manf. web sites and you should be able to find something in your price/power range. also surf www.termpro.com and check out the competitor profiles, they show what types of equip the db draggers use in their comp vehicles.   let me know how it turns out!

Is this a set up thats strictly for spl or is it also a daily driver. I would also recomend not using a Nak deck for SPL comps because at competion volumes they tend to skip. Eclipse decks are far better suited for spl comps because the transports are tuned to resonate at a frequency much lower than what is used in competion

I know, I should be tarred and feathered for it but the only time I have seen an SPL competitor use a nak deck is when they have a podium set up where the deck is out side the vehicle. Inside they GENERALLY cannot handle a truly high SPL enviroment. Now if 140 is where he wants to go then he will probally be fine but if he is looking to hit LEGIT 150's and up then I would look else where. The reason why I asked if it was a daily driver is because if its strictly an SPL vehilce the MTX RFL subs are extremely imprssive for SPL but cannot be used in a normal daily driver, they are essencially 1 note wonders. The Juggs are a great SPL driver but I would be willing to bet that you can get 3-4 brahmahs for the same price and obviously if they are powered right then they are gonna lay waste to the Jugg. How many subs is he gonna use, has he decided on power and what kinda vehicle is this for. I just want to know before I start to blindly throw names out

I was very impressed by a van that had four 15" subs called Apocalypse in a wall behind the front seat. He had a old school 3000W Visonik amp running to each, these amps were HUGE like damn near three feet long! He hit 155DB, pretty respectible. Ive also seen some nice setups with PowerBass Extreme subs.

the jeep was a one note wonder,   but loud as hell.   that setup wasnt the loudest in the world, but the only thing that beat it were sponsored vans and trucks with campers full of equipment.   but it beat several vans too.  anyway point im making is pick a good quality sub and then it will be the tuning of the enclosure that makes the difference.  that was the 14th box in the jeep that year.  on the other hand the blazer plays every freq and does 155+ with about 6kw.  i was to lazy to rebuild that last year  plus if your guy wants to buy a us amp de 6000 double d amp, thats about 12kw at .5ohm for burps, ive got one here with about 15minutes play time on it ill let him have for $3500, they retail for over $6000.  you should be able to build something louder than my blazer with that.
