I have an Alpine MRD-M501 amp, driving an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1D (wired to 2 ohms)

I smelled something funny, so I check it out, and it's comming from the amp.  I flip throught the display on the Alpine amp, and it says it's 105 F.  I'm wondering if this is hot for this amp or not.  I was working the amp hard just before, so that's not like an idle temp....

thanks guys

-Drew

Umm, no thats not good, i ran my old MRD-M500 at 1.5ohm and blasted it hard everywhere and it never went over 80F.  Check the coil resistance on the subs see if their still in spec.  Check what voltage your running at when it happends, low voltage makes amps work harder.

It was 13.7-13.8 volts

The sub is brand new, but I'll check it anyway...

Yeah, it smells like burning tranisisors.....not too good....

well, here's the good (or bad) news....

I found out it wan't the amp I was smelling, it was the sub.  I blew one of the voice coils, and I blew the spider off the coils.....sorda like my last sub....except I didn't fry my last sub, just blew the spider off the coil....

Yeah, this is the second kappa perfect I've gone through......Guess I AM running too much power to them :(

sub is speced to 350 watts, I have a 550 watt amp.....but I don't drive the amp that hard..

p.s.  don't you love that burn electronic smell?  if they made cologne that smelt like it i would buy it hehe

Alpine, me looking at the Type R 300 rms sub with the same amp, will that happen to me?

My box is almost 1 cu ft dead on, sealed (of course).  I have heard that the perfect can handle 500 wattts easy in a sealed box.  I'm just gonna say F* it now, I'm looking at the new Alpine Type-R's which say 500 watts RMS....

The test shet with my amp says it actually puts out 578 watts.....

I'm glad my amp isn't fried though.  The sub was $120, amp was $220, so if anything is gonna blow, I'm glad it's the sub....

As for that burnt electronics smell.......now it's filled my room.....time to bust out the Fabreeze

If your looking into the new type-r it will be about 3-4 more weeks before it hits shelves.  And your box size is good, , very odd the sub blew.

yeah, well the perfect is rated at 350 watts, and the amp will put out 550 all day long....

I'm gonna wait an pick up a type-R, then wait a little while longer, try to send the Perfect back, get the new one, then sell that one on e-bay......

I'm thinking I'm gonna like the type-R better anyway....
